First: Old Hammer Shrine.
1. enter through north window from alley
2. enter with psychic's key via water duct
3. enter without psychic's key via water duct by jumping down the well near Alarus' front gate.
4. enter from New Hammer cathedral via secret door switch thrown in High Priest's bedroom. A switch under the New Hammer cathedral also opens the same secret door.Unfortunately I do not have time to write a walkthrough right now and by the time I do (near the holidays) it will probably not be in such demand. Sorry.
Ithel: so YOU'RE one of THOSE bastatdly professors who never hands out an A? Hmmm. I was an English major with solid As. Think we might have clashed?
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I think it's so interesting the kinds of people who are pulled into any given forum. I wonder if people in our professional arena know what we do with our spare time. heh heh...
My feeling on handing out As is this: the carrot is just a carrot. It's not a wonderful meal, a feast worth dying for...its just a carrot. If you make getting the carrot difficult it makes it sweet. If you make getting the carrot nigh impossible you make getting the carrot irrelevant at best and bitter at worst. No carrot is worth blood sweat and tears...I save those for prizes that consist of more than a pat on the back and "Hey boy, that was a job well done."
Back to TtDP: At TEG, you get lots of pats on the back and lots of "Hey boy, that was a job well done." I am amazed at the effort some people WILL put into a new level. AND I think that is fantastic. Probably they DO deserve a gold hammer and for them it is probably worth it. I, on the other trite hand, am too busy writing and working to be so commited to TEG. People like myself may not get Gold Hammers, but then we really don't NEED them either. My sense of satisfaction was the many many e-mails and posts that appeared on the forum. They said I "passed".
As a final comment, people perform better after reaffirmation and congratulatory response to their effort. If Ithel gives out only c+ grades...quite simply Ithel will never have an A student. Who's fault is that?

One word......Amazing!

I guess I should clarify.

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Purah, I teach freshmen writing....English majors are few and far between. Because of certain department policies, the average for my course has to fall within a small range. A few students have earned A- or B+, both very respectable grades. But I try to teach my class not to think about grades at all. I'd rather have them measure their "success" by how well they've learned to write or how much they've improved their writing. I'm not always able to convince them that this is better than worrying about grades, but I do try. It sounds like you feel much the same way about your mission. You weren't motivated by the promise of a gold hammer...you were motivated by a desire to put something together that others would enjoy. So we probably wouldn't have clashed, even if we'd met in college.

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif You're probably older than me, anyway, heh...

Ithel, no disrespect meant,
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif of course. And I appreciate your input.
I also totaly agree with the gradeless approach. What the hell is a grade worth anyway? And what does an abstract "A" really mean? If college students came to class like vampires wanting to suck their instructor dry there wouldn't be a need for grades.
To translate and invert that lame vampire conceit for TtDP and DromEd, if no one got any type of hammer "grade" and the only measure was how much your level was talked about on the forum, there would be a general gush towards those levels with high creativity (like Edmund Entertains and DoG) without people getting their wholly altruistic TEG endeavors stepped on by an equally non-pro review staff.
No offense to our (also altruistic) reviewers

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gifBottom line, I love the forum for it's candid, poll-like, real-time response and interaction to & with all TEG members' efforts.
Hurrah for the Forum!

Mr. (Dr.) Purah!
That was one Mutha of a level! Very well done.
Even with your brief, brief, brief 17 point spoiler (which I could not have completed the level without), it was tough. Garrett must have the sorest forearms he's ever had after all that rope climbing. Even I'm sore.
Expect a Hammer or two on that one. You fellas and ladies realy are trying to outdo each other aren't you.
Plan on doing anymore???
Honestly, I have never,...NEVER, enjoyed playing any game like this one. Your FM's just keep the challenges coming.
Thanks again, and keep up the good work.

Planning on doing another???
Well, not by myself. There are too many technical aspects of DromED and level design for me to do another level better than Autumn in Lampfire Hills.
But...a taffer by the name of James Slade and I are discussing a possible cooperative effort. His level is (to my knowledge) coming out very soon.
cheers!

Oddly enough, I'm having a serious technical glitch with Lampfire Hills. At the very beginning, after decending the ladder and picking the book up off the table, if I "use" the book I immediately dump to a black screen. Only way to recover is to reboot.
It's happening every time I run the mission (using Thief Loader, PII-266, 64MB). Never ran into this with any other FM. Any ideas?
Viper6 on 25/11/1999 at 18:24
SpudHunter,
It's not realy a technical glitch, just a simple mistake. The file to that first book is in the wrong subdirectory. In one of these posts are instructions on what file to move, and where to move it to. I was lazy, didn't bother, and finished the level anyway. Just don't try to read that book or it kicks you back to Windows desktop.

I've just finished playing Autumn- 5 times! I had one hell of a time getting through the door in the chimney, let me tell you! That, and finding the secret switch/key were difficult, but I loved the flaming-hand guy! Most of the level allows you to run amok and kill/biff people into oblivion, and the end is all Lytha style play or you're sunk! I loved the rooftop action (You gave TLG ideas for Thief II, no doubt! ;-) getting into the armory. The only thing is that the Hammerite mage was a big wuss. Just wake him up and let him stand there, walk up, pickpocket, and knock him back to sleep. He even falls onto the bed! :-) I can't tell you how enjoyable this was. For some reason, while up on the rooftop, I shot up a couple of guards. Then everyone from the bar spilled out into the street, and I had to kill 'em all, or taff 'em. It was great. Quite a sleepy little town, when you're all done. :-) Keep making missions, please!
Better n' killin' strangers. :-)

Purah,
First, I want to say GREAT level, even though I've yet to finish it. It seems to me that a large number of level designers forget that there's a large group of people running thief unnacellerated on a P166 with 32 MB RAM. I've tried to play levels over and over, only to find thatthe same guard in the long hall with a million polys isn't fazed by a shitty frame rate (COS2, also havent completed yet
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif ). The architechture is good, no, great, outstanding, but there's too many guards wandering around on long, wide streets filled with 3d windows and doors that slow the HELL out of the mission, thouroghly detracting from the gaming experience. And I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but I personally dont feel the level deserves a gold hammer. The only level in original thief 1 that I had trouble with due to frame rates was the Return to the Cathedral (I personally would've taken quite a few hammers from TLG for that one. I'll be waiting for your next offering, however, so keep up the good work!
