4206 is the maximum loot. This was confirmed by Purah & Nightwalker in a long lost post. After nearly a month of trying to find the max mentioned in the end stats I found this out and then promptly shot myself in the face. :)

I did a search to answer my question about how to get through a gate under water. [SPOILER]A key in the psychic's room.
However, there is no key. I see a switch on the side of the bookcase, but it only opens and closes the floor hatch.

I have been trying to play Lampfire Hills for T1 and can't get it to show up after the screen where you buy gear. when I load it after that I get a black screen. Any suggestions?

Can you play other thief 1 FM's ok ? If so can you play the OM's ? If both yes check to see if its a bad download. Download it again if possible.
If 1'st answer is no make sure you have convict.osm in your thief 1 directory.
Be sure its the right one there is also one for thief 2 :P
You could also try reinstalling thief if all else fails.

I think that as Thelvyn suggests it hinges on whether you can play other T1 missions, or T1 at all. If you have a new graphics card then oftentimes neither Thief 1 or 2 will play. I know when I bought my new one neither did. However there are fixes which are outlined over at the Troubleshooting forum. They worked for me. It involved d/ling the old Nvidea drivers. Good luck.

It would help if you said WHICH chests but I'm presuming you mean the floating ones in the underground area since that's what most people run into trouble with. You need to use the key that is found in the small chapel that is under renovation. There's a hidden room, up off of the rafters. The key is in there.

Given the time of year, I fancied another crack at this classic mission. However, rather strangely, opening the ingame map shows the first page of the map from Thieves Guild, rather than the Lampfire Hills one. It seems to me that Thief's looking in the .crf file for the map, rather than the subdirectory. Any idea why it's doing this? Ta much!
