I have a strong feeling that this should be blindingly obvious to me, but I can't find the psychic's place. I bet it's right in front of my nose, huh? <img src="tongue.gif" border="0">
<blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">Spoiler:</font><div style="background-color:#000080"><font color="#202080">If it's that metal door next to the ground-floor entrance to the Keepers' Library, I don't have a key that works and it can't be picked. If it's not that door, I have NO idea where it could be.</font></div></blockquote>
I feel like a maroon. Will someone help please?

The Psychic's place is actually...<br /><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">Spoiler:</font><div style="background-color:#000080"><font color="#202080">very close to the very beginning of the mission. You leave your cottage, go down into town past the first Jack-o-lantern, then down more stairs, then take a right. There should be a ladder nearlby and and a trap door up in the ceiling of that area. Go up there!</font></div></blockquote>

So, I started the aforementioned FM. When I went downstairs, I got the journal and started to read it. . . or not! When I tried to read it, the computer crashed to the desktop at a huge resolution (way over my monitor's size - I'd estimate around 1600x1200) and low color. The Windows toolbar was inaccessable, and Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't work! I had to turn off the power at the source in to restart my computer!
This happened several times. I experimented by minimizing the Darkloader window before the game was fully started. This way I was able to select the Desktop Settings after the crash, but when I tried to resize the desktop it crashed my computer really spectacularly. This doesn't happen when I try to read other messages in the level.
I could possibly play the level without reading the journal, but I really don't want to. That journal contains the story/briefing of the mission. The info contained in it needed to know what you're doing. Please help me. This FM has a great rep, and what I've seen so far is great! I don't want to have to abandon it.

The problem with the book is a well known bug. It is possible to fix it, but I don't remember how. I do, however, have the contents of the book for you. <img src="graemlins/angel.gif" border="0" alt="[Angel]" />
Book in Garrett's cottage - contents
<br />Page_0: "Damn, I'm getting sentimental in my old age...starting to keep a diary!<br />Since the Rothchest sale/burglary I'm debt free and in a position to finally<br />start living comfortably. I purchased this cottage on the north edge of the city<br />in a neighborhood called Lampfire Hills with good intentions of settling down.<br />Unfortunately, this dreary world seems intent on drawing me further down the<br />spiral by offering just enough surprises to hold my interest."
Page_1: "Two days ago, I found a locked switch on one of the walls of my<br />cottage-it doesn't have a key. It may be magically bound because I can't pick<br />the damn thing even with hours of leisure time to spare. Curious, and with<br />nothing better to do, I asked around and did some prying.<br />The fellow who owns the grocery down the hill said the previous owner sold the<br />cottage to me after he grew uneasy. Said there was some old story about an<br />alchemist living in the cottage but refused to say more.<br />Tonight is Autumn Soul's Eve and it's been a while since I've gone trick or<br />treating. But this evening, after dusk, I think I'll give it a shot:"<br /> <br />Page_2: "1. For starters, I'm going to steal an antique jeweled dagger owned by<br />a rich fop across town (part of the Alarus Family)...the dagger once belonged to<br />a king. Maybe I'll start a hobby collection now that I'm out of debt.<br />2. The night will still be young; afterwards, or along the way, I have to do<br />some breaking and entering at the Keeper Library. There has to be an archive<br />somewhere detailing the plans and original builder of my cottage. From there, I<br />guess I'll go wherever I'm led in order to"
Page_3: "solve this little mystery of the locked switch. I like this<br />neighborhood because it's quiet, old, full of history and atmosphere. Lots of<br />people going out of town for the holiday though...can't figure out why. Maybe<br />it's that old legend that Lampfire Hills are haunted and Autumn Soul's Eve is a<br />prime night for spooks.<br />3. I guess I'll visit the psychic while I'm out. Maybe she has some info on my<br />cottage and/or other local legends.<br />After tonight, I should be able to tell one way or another whether the rumored<br />hauntings have a basis in fact...<br />-Garrett
Have fun! This mission is fantastic. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

This is caused by three ****.str (readable) files being unzipped into the wrong place. If you go into your Thief directory, you'll see that a new Thief directory has been created inside it, and inside this is a second Books directory. Move the Lamp1, Lamp16 and Lamp25.str files in here into the main Books directory.
ps. i believe there's no map either, so looking at that will crash the game also.

Indeed, the .zip file structure just needs to be fixed, that's all. We really need to get it all fixed up so that future downloads are good...

if this is happening to me only:
are there any important news into the downstair journal in Garrett's house?

The problem with the book happens to everybody. I've never read it and I've played the mission several times. I understand you can go into the mission and do something to it to make the book readable, but I don't mess with stuff like that. You might be able to find out how if you did a search. :)

What happened was that a couple of the mission files were not zipped entirely correctly, they go into the wrong place, thus Thief crashes...if you install (don't play) Lampfire via Darkloader and then navigate to your Thief directory you'll see that there is a new Thief subdirectory that has been created..inside that is a Books directory. What you need to do is copy the three .str files from there to the 'main' Books directory, and delete the extra Thief directory..that should do it. <IMG SRC="thumb.gif" border="0">
