Is there any other way to get the Duke's journal than to just run & grab & quickly escape before the gate closes?

Also, I have been able to do that, but then I'm stuck. I guess you can get out of the Necropolis, but I just don't know how. Also, where's all the loot? I've got some 150 in loot, from the 800/1250 I need to get...

Your supposed to get trapped in there and then solve the riddle to escape.

I know (I read the previous topic, didn't notice it until I started this one), but what's the riddle? I can't recall any riddles from Vigil at the moment.

Sorry i don't remember what it said but there was a fire and water arrow next to it (when reading the riddle you'll figure out what these are for). There will be plenty of time to grab more loot as the mission is only just starting at that stage.

Here be a spoiler:

Playin' the Vigil. The prologue leads me to expect the undead. I hate the undead. A lot. They give me the willies. Creep into the Necropolis. Lay out the two guards. Visit the church and grab the Caretaker's key from the back room. Wander over to the Caretaker's quarters. I read the little missive from the authorities regarding the non-compliance with regulations concerning preparedness for the undead in necropolis-s of the size of the one I'm in. Did I mention how much the undead give me the willies? Have a look down the hall. Open the door on the left. A closet? A few timbers in there. I lean in to have a look. BAM! Garret hollars and dies. I (first time ever while playing Thief) give a hollar. Almost wet myself. What the heck was that?
