You've got the wrong gate. You haven't gotten to that one yet. The one by the dark mansion needs the explosive charge.
The one you are trying to open has a key.
Hint: You will find it in the High Priest's area.
Bigger hint: There is a secret switch in his room.
Giveaway: Next to the bed is a plant. Click around it. You will find the key in the room that opens.
The other gate in that area also has a key.
Hint: One of the guards is carrying it.
Giveaway: It's the guard on top of the tower.

It's the guard on top of the tower.Actually, this is not correct. The guard in the tower has the key to the city watch station.
The key to the other gate is found
on one of the guards up on the guards overlook by the pizzeria. There is a gate that prevents you from accessing this area untill you have been in the Mayors office. Up on the overlook is also a big lever that opens the gate by the pizzeria. One reason a couple of people hava had a problem with finding that key and have had to create mountains of crates is that they don't read the briefing or the objectives carefully. It clearly states that you, first of all, should visit the Mayors office to find out more concerning the situation. The Mayors office is really close to where you start, has a big sign outside, and is very easy to find.
Good luck, and watch out. :thumb:

As I said before: this approach doesn't work.
There are very different styles people play Thief missions and Thief is a game which consists of exploring the environment and finding alternative ways.
You must either provide different ways the players can take (rooftops, streets, sewers...) or only one way but make sure the player can't take another way.

Intruder, I think this approach is always reasonable. No matter what style of playing you have, you should always read the briefing and follow it, read the objectives and follow them.
If the briefing and the objectives says to first of all, before you do anything else, visit the Mayor to find out more concerning the situation, and there is a building right next to where you start with a big sign saying "City Mayor", then you can't just skip this and start building mountains of crates to get over a wall just because you can't yet find the key to the gate.
I do agree with you on making it impossible for a player to go alternate routes if you desire for the player to stick to a specific route. As I've said before, I would make those crates unfrobbable if I make an update. My intention and effort was exactly what you are suggesting, to make it impossible to find an alternate route. I thought I had succeeded untill somebody made this crate mountain. But still, if you run into problems because you did not follow the breifing or the objectives, you can't blame it on having a different style of playing.
I too, many times, like to find alternate routes or try to find ways that breaks a mission. But if I start to create mountains of crates I normally realise that I'm choosing a way that the creator of the mission did not intend for the mission to be solved. And I don't get surprised if I end up on the other side of a wall and can't get back. This happens to me all the time through stacking crates, using speed potion, slow fall potion or shooting rope arrows at everything that even looks close to wood.

That's allright pav, :D Even though you were heavily involved in making this mission, I don't expect you to remember every detail forever. Have a great day and keep up your fantastic Thief work. :thumb:

I mostly agree, but I have played several missions where the objectives stated that I should do something before anything else, but in fact it turned out that I could do it after some other objectives.
In this mission (which I enjoyed a lot, btw :thumb: ), I was stuck for two hours before I finally found the
button in the Mayor´s Office. That´s OK - it was pretty clumsy to miss it, and I got to very thoroughly check out the rest of the first part of the mission.
What was not OK (IMO) is that I was stuck for
another hour because I could not imagine that fulfilling the first objective
would raise the portcullis by the elevator for no logical reason whatsoever. I think a much better solution would have been to put an essential key in the same alcove as the important readable.Oh, and I needed only two crates to get over the wall and into the Hammerite areas (and also to get to that very lonely guard). If you stand on a crate next to the short end of the huge tank in front of the Mayor´s Office, you can mantle up on the tank. If you do that while you hold another crate, you can drop that crate on the tank, stand on it and jump-mantle up on either of the two walls here. This is what I tried when I got stuck, but I abandoned this because it was obvious that I was in 'out-of-bounds' areas.

It was mentioned in the readme to look back at closed gates, becuase they may be raised by other people in the game. I wanted to create a more live feeling, like in the normal world, where doors are opened and gates are raised by others than yourself. Your suggestion to make a key may in the end prove to be the best solution, but on the other hand making the crates unfrobable would make the player find out that the portcullis had been raised by a guard entering the guard area. That was my intention, and would have worked if those crates were not frobable. :p :p :D
Still, It's allright to solve this mission by stacking crates and getting over walls. It just gets solved a different way. Either way is fine with me. :thumb:
Thanks for your valueable comments and I'm glad you liked the mission.
Any newcomers reading this post.....just bear in mind.....don't touch those crates....just leave them....:cheeky:

I'm in the ghost house. Took care of everything down stairs. when up the stairs, got note from invisible zombie. Couldn't open double doors here. Rode elevator down 1 floor, got loot and killed mage ghost and thief. Never found key to open gate in the lower level. Can someone give me a hint. I read that a haunt should have the key, but never found one.

Marker98, here's a hint for you.
First key:
Take the elevator to first floor where the thief is. In the large room look up, there's a hole in the ceiling. Rope up through the hole. There you'll find the haunt with the key. The key leads to the lower halls and opens the gate at the bottom of the elevator.Second key:
It's on the armrest of the Tricksters throne seat. It'll open the double doors by the invisible haunt carrying a scroll.Good luck and watch your back;)
