Sticky Fingers on 31/5/2008 at 11:42
Nice to see this all got worked out - was a bit of a puzzler.
You should enjoy it more this time, redleaf, & as a bonus you get to enter the
Dark Zone again!

Whew, Drk! That's a relief. I'm glad you're not offended.
I'm aware of you're difficulties with English. I struggle with French. Often when I work up the courage to speak something aloud to one of your countrymen, I will receive a look that says, "What is it you're trying to say to me, you silly foreign girl?"
I'm surprised that blackjacking the souls kills them. I used the blackjack because I thought it would NOT kill them. One cool thing about knocking them out, though ... when you pick them up to hide them, you learn their names - I love it when an author takes the time to name the AIs.
I'll be in St. Surin (near Berjerac) this summer, not very far from Narbonne. The area is full of wonderful medieval stone textures for fms. My fm won't be as grand as yours or others I admire, but a girl has to start somewhere, right?
Ok -- back to the game now! :)
PS: This sounds nuts, but I'm reading Thales' instructions for the first time. Everything is explained! I see what you and SF meant when you said you didn't understand how I could have got so far without it. Somehow, I managed to bungle my way to an almost successful end. But how could I have missed the book before? I was in his apartment in my previous play. I explored his bedroom and bathroom and looted the place. The only thing I missed was a gold plate, which I stole at the end when I brought him the Book of Names. It seems that I did 'break' the mission. I wish there was some way to print a warning about this in the ReadMe file. But what could you warn against? Do you really think it was the Blackjacking?
I remember you said I couldn't enter the tower and meet Soul Vlain unless I first had the meeting with Thales, and got the South Star key from his apartment. But isn't there another SS key you can get before entering the tower? I think I had 3 of them at one point. I'll see if I still have the save from that time.
Another strange difference. There's an elevator in the North Star that stops on the same floor where there's a library/meeting hall kind of place. In the last play, I never used it. I crept along the stairs, entered the room, doused lights, and knocked everybody out, except the creepy child-thing. This play, I rode the elevator, and got to hear a conversation after which the meeting dispersed. Did the conversation and dispersal fail to trigger on previous play because I avoided the elevator?

I've got 2 magical stones and searched out for Book of Names, but have no clue where it is... Where is Dumah's room if it is there?...
DrK on 1/6/2008 at 19:12
bartekb81 :
Dumah's quarters is in the north star. From the Workshops there are 2 ways to go back up in the upper levels : a stair with an elevator in its center, and a circular stair with a guardian top of it. Dumah's quarters can be found top of the circular stairs with the guardian nearby. In there you'll find the book.

About the blackjacking, honestly I can't tell... I did put a warning about the fact you should act depending on the situation (follow an AI speaking to you blah blah) : this includes to act undercover. ;)
About the key, indeed there are 3 of them, but 2 are unreachable as they are in rooms locked by this kind of key. I mean, you have to get the key from thales to get the other 2 keys.
Normally the meeting is triggered by 3 places : in front of the Vine Zone, in the elevator AND in the stairs nearby. If you climbed using the stairs it should have triggered as well. Maybe there was a loud noise before, or you got spotted by an AI, making the souls at the meeting alerted and breaking the conversation somehow, I dunno I never had this bug before.
Looks like you can ghost the game itself...

DrK: Do you have any screenshots available? I'm curious about what the intended light levels are. (Of course, I'm asking this fully aware that everybody's monitors are different....)
There were plenty of times where I was fussing with the gamma, trying to figure out what looked best. Granted, I suppose that fits to the story; Garrett's got a mechanical eye, after all.

Thx, Drk, I wouldn't find the book without Your help. But, damn...Where the hell is my escape route now?...I think it's somewhere at south star? I'm totally lost by the end of this mission:confused: (Too bad there's no map at all)

The route out
Go back to the tower to the Portals (Vlains room).go through the portals door turn right, one of the portals is now open. If you stand in front of Vlain he will tell you as well.

I have just finished this mission and I must say that...I enjoyed it very much.
It's got great story, atmosphere, intense, complexity, wealth in details and much, much more:D Nearly ideal FM. I think it's one of these mission that not only tells us about one of the Garrett's adventures, but bring us nearer to the world of Thief, too. And thanks for that, DrK. Great job;)

Bartekb81, glad you liked it that much. I'm trying to find back that special feel I had when I first played the Thief series, and I hope I succeded. :)
Gillie,
did you notice as well the look of the attacks from the protective souls and the interpreters ? Basically they throw you books and scrolls, just like the mechanist and hammerite priests throw gears and hammers.Draiocht, I dunno what to say. Some were posted on the circle, others at darkfate.ru, others here for the french forum :

They all look different, it depends on one's monitors as you say. Personally I have 3 monitors : a videoprojector, a normal computer and my laptop. The game looks completely different with each of them, and I found it interesting as the game looks like a specific experience depending on the kind of monitor. Just do like me, adjust the gamma to make it comfortable, and sorry if it doesn't look as pretty as it was meant to be...
