After cutting the power to the electric gate, you get access to the window of Father Sahab's room. In there you find the weekly report and a key called "Gaurd's Room". This key opens the door above the wooden staircase next to the well and practically gives you access to the whole map. Immediately after opening the aforementioned door you enter a room with a small table, a bed on the floor and a mechanist novice fast asleep. There is a note on that table complaining about a bad smell which does not exist downstairs. If you listen carefully you can actually hear flies buzzing too. These two are two hints for you to find the source of the bad smell nearby. Look up and there is a hole in the ceiling. The key is up there.
If the key is not there then you have already found and used it to take the life crystal from the chest. If this is not the case either, let me know and I will take a look at your save game.
