I'm quite stuck. I'm trying to find the clue objective, but I have no idea where to go. There's a bunch of locked doors at the inn that I can't pick, and I see nowhere else to go, I've been all over

First you have to look for any clues near the House of Science. Read the scroll on the door.

Then you need to find Thereon. Go to the tavern. By this time Inspector Mercader returned to his room #1 and Inspector Thereon returned to his room #3. But the room #3 is sealed. Go to room #1. You can sneak past Mercader and use the window to enter a room #3.
(you get a hint about the tavern only on Easy difficulty)

In the room #3 you need to find secret information about incident. (According to the goal you have to find Thereon, but he turned to stone to restore their strength. So you need Thereon's diary and maybe something else...).

Ok I went into Thereon's room and got the diary. Now I need to know how to get into the forest. I can't pick the wooden shed nearby, and none of the guards on the ramparts have any keys...

You need a crowbar to remove the planks below the roof and on the side of wooden shed

I need to locate the forestkey. I understand it is on top of the guard barracks roofbut I cannot locate this guards barracksHelp!
