Are you dropping the items in first before trying to light it? And at the correct time in the mission?
Ie. after you've taken the crown. If yes to both, all you should have to do is drop the flare onto the brazier.
ah after, of course, nothing is ever simple is it

@Esme
After frobbing the crown next to the throne on the top level of the mage's tower, the brazier is teleported out and replaced with an 'active' brazier, one that will respond to the spell components, and will activate a blue flame when receiving a firestim from a flare or fire arrow, etc. It doesn't matter what order the components are placed on the active brazier, nor does it matter when you light it, just so long as it's after you've frobbed the crown. You'll be able to tell that it's active because the spell components are teleported away once they touch the brazier.
If all else fails, grab your trusty sword, steel your courage, and go take out the wraiths manually. After killing all six, you'll complete the objective. If the last wraith you kill is at the cabin, you'll have to go the to stream, and re-enter the escape room around the cabin to complete the "Get back to your cabin objective."
It's terribly weird it's not working for you though... I have no idea where things could have gone wrong. Did the dialogue play when you tried to grab the crown?

I was trying to do the wraith killing spell before picking up the crown
I should have known that would be too easy though

I'm having the same problem.
The brazier does not become active when I take the crown, I'm also transported back to the canyon moments after taking the crown. Just to add, I get a puff of smoke when lifting the crown, the new objective bell rings and the additional challenge of destroying the demons. I'm having no luck at all killing the things manually, I've killed one, leaving me a couple of health shields remaining.
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!

Basil - there's a readable in the mage's tower listing ingrediants for a spell; find those ingredients & use / drop them onto the brazier along with a flare.
Killing them one by one might take some time! :D
Edit: the brazier doesn't look active (or didn't for me) but it should be once the crown has disappeared (etc). And you're supposed to be transported back to the canyon at that point.
Basil on 7/11/2009 at 12:45
I should have mentioned this in my last post.
but I have all the ingrediants, they just sit in the brazier and it won't light.
Dried frog egg
Skull
flashing 'shroom

Basil - the ingrediants are supposed to disappear (apparently 'teleported' somewhere) as you use / drop them on the brazier. If the crown has disappeared, you got the new objective & the nasties are around - dunno, sounds like you've found a bug :(
Maybe d/l it again?

Finally...
Ok, done it, but I had to return to the tower. I got lucky one time and landed on the ledge instead of the canyon floor, so it was easy to get back. It doesn't seem to want to work on the first visit. It makes sense, otherwise you never get to see the really cool monsters.
Thanks for trying SF.
btw, I did D/L from another mirror but exactly the same thing happened until I lucked into the solution, thus proving a valuable lesson -
