thief will sometimes do this for no reason and the only fix most of us do is to do a fresh install of thief, apply all the patches and then make a backup of the game folder so we dont have to go through all that again.
Also do you have vertical sync turn on in your gfx cards control panel..?

Ok. i managed to finish the game. It worked when i restarted the mission
and ran directly to the basement, no crash. Thief is weird sometimes :D
I will look for that vertical sync you mentioned. Thanks for the tips.

On Nvidia control panel it says "Use the 3D application setting". Is that good?
Or shall i change to "Force off" or "Force on"?

Replaying and need some help.
Where IS that portal and how do I get there.
I got all other objectives just now Father Conrad's skull. I think I must get onto the roof (been there) but how do I get all the way up that tower?
I'm missing something here. Hope someone can help.

There is a staircase that you use. Don't remember exactly at the moment, but it is a maze of passages up to the final level.
I seem to remember that you go through a room on the middle level that has some statues in it.
I just might fire it up to recheck.

Gloria, do you have all 4 Talismans? You also need a key that one of the haunts was wearing. It unlocks a door that leads into the room where you use the talismans. I believe that gives you access to the tower.

Thanks, I'm already opened the tower with the four talisman keys. I went all the way up, found the secret room .... and now what? Smashed all the haunts (one female haunt is especially going after me :devil:) ....

So you've found Father Conrad's skull? In that same room there's a scroll with instructions on how to open the portal which is in the room at the top of the tower.

There's no real trick to it, Gloria. There are sliding panels that block the doorways and as you approach them they slide open and you can go through. The only one that's hard to see is in a room filled with a mist. The room at the top is the room where you activate the portal.
