Did you turn the wheel at the water pool where your "find Water" objective switches to completed? You've found the Book, haven't you? If so: visit the place where a cage was lying on top of a sarcophagus (where you found the note about the staff) again and search the environment for something new.

No, the wrong route will always kill you and the correct route is always the same. It's set up by blocking each wrong route with an unrendered fence with a very strong slashstim triggered on contact.

[spoiler]There is/was a lava pool, which you can transform into water by simply enlighting Ra-Teps gaze. Put the torch at his shrine on fire. Then dive through the water pool and on the other side of the water tunnel, there is the wheel you're supposed to turn.[/spoiler]

If that doesn't help you, search this thread for the code, there has been a mayor spoiler on that topic already.
edit: that second thing you need is the book called "Golik's Notes"
