I agree with urgrue please do not stop. This is a wonderful mission one of the best I've played in 10 yrs. of playing FM's. I had some problems with optional objectives but after 10 hrs. + I still enjoyed and was able to finish it.

On another note:
There is a bug when entering/exiting the special realm accessible via a red heart floating inside a red cloud, so, if you encounter this heart, please consider postponing any interactions with it until later to avoid any side-effects (especially maps disappearing). Entering the special realm is necessary only if you want all the alternative endings, so you can still finish the mission (with the standard ending plus one more) without entering.
A tip is to get everything ready for the standard ending (save, watch the standard ending if you want, and then reload), and then go back to the heart and enter the special realm to prepare for the alternative endings. It is regrettable that I can't fix this permanently, but you should be able to bypass it and get all endings even without a fix.

I have to say that when I was playing in the beginning, I was getting frustrated. Yes, I played on Expert. Then I looked at the thread and saw your post about being frustrated on expert.
It was the reverse direction that was killing me
Anyway, I went back in the game and continued.
I discovered by removing the spikes from the haunts' backs, I could navigate down the stairs normally and they reverted back to normal unconscious guards
Once I got passed this area, things progressed.
I've picked up a ton of items and yet to learn what to do with them save the burrick pea that temporarily incapacitates the water worms. I've gotten my gear,which has been a godsend. I've gone through much of the building so far, but decided to go back to the bottom and start exploring. Still looking for a lantern. I'm hoping to find more info on all the stuff I've found.
Found the lantern. Got to the bottom area, which had the female floating zombie. I don't know if I was supposed to heal her, but I blew her up with a fire arrow. It looks like a secret door is across the lava from where she is, but I can't find out how to open it. I used 2 vine arrows to get down to the area.
So now I'm enjoying things and I feel I have yet to find some great excitement yet to come. I've opened several doors leading to outside and it seems the graphics are slowing down. I'm trying not to look too much hoping that my computer doesn't crash.
One last thing, I just went in the mortuary. I love the concept of laying in the coffin. Cool beans. My first thought which I'm not sure anyone has ever done in a mission was that opening a coffin standing up and having the corpse fall out on you with a jolting sound would be a great effect to scare people
I'll probably post again when I finish with more comments and if I run into any problems note them. Great mission.

Just a short note about the slowing down: There is an alternative mission file you can try, which should improve your frame rate (instructions are in the first post of this thread). You will have to restart your playthrough, though.

After more than 11 hours of playing I'm still unable to proceed. I'm stuck on so many things. So let's start.
1. How do I produce holy ink?
One thread states that I should use the empty vial for that. But what's exact procedure for that? When I drop the empty vial from my inventory to the ground and try to frob it with ink or blessed water (by "frobbing" I mean the bringing up the ink vial in my inventory, centering it in my view and trying to bring it in the same line of sight with already dropped empty vial), the only result is that I'm picking already dropped vial which goes again straight into my inventory as empty vial. No changes whatsoever. Same result with the blessed water. Also changing the order of dropped items doesn't seem to work. So how should I exactly mix the ink with blessed water?
2. Also I'm missing some items required for the Ritual
One item is holy ink, I already mentioned above, the other is "Something taken from the target"
Is the heart found in the basement on the second island "Something taken from the target"? If so, to be able to pick it up I presume I need the Crystal of no Bonds. Therefore I also need burnt remains from the target. Where to obtain these?
3. Someone also mentioned theHeart Realm. Will I get there after finishing the ritual?
4. Also in the caverns I found some metal doors. Two of these I'm still unable to open: Some shall pass and Be more what you can be.
Any hints on how to proceed, but especially how to mix two items to obtain third, will be greatly appreciated.

I've gotten a little lost with this. I made it to the caves.
Picked up King and Queen hearts. Have no idea what to do with them. Got 2 different dewdrops. Picked up something that was glowing floating above with several haunts in the area, but I don't see what that is in the area. Beating heart is locked and I cannot grab it yet. Zombies now are on several of the levels above the lava and cannot be hurt with sword. Thought about trying to use the hearts on them, but haven't gotten a chance to see if that'll work. I see something at the bottom in the middle of the lava pool, but haven't found a way to get to it yet. The gems that glow when you touch them, do they only open 1 coffin? I was trying to put in other symbols, but nothing else is happening. Will work on it this weekend, but may need some real help. Still have not used anything I'm carrying except for the burrick peas.

Wanted to ask this so I don't have to go on and then have to go back. I decided to toss all of the hearts in the lava that I picked up. The king and queen and also the mummified and can't remember what the other was that I got off the pedestal. 2 of the mummies vanished that were laying in the coffins at the top by the gem door. I was able to hurt another towards the bottom. My question is was I supposed to destroy them? If not, let me know which I can destroy and which I can't. I see that there are 5 depressed spaces, but can't do much with them since I can only stand on one at a time.
Also, when I first entered this area, there is a mummy on the ground and a symbol you can click behind a coffin. Is that symbol doing anything? I'm wondering if I turned something on or not. I ask this because I've clicked it so many times, I wouldn't know if it was on or off. I did find the one that turned on the lights.
Also found a dead woman or something at the bottom of the 2nd floor in the water, but don't see anything to do with her. I haven't been able to open any of the doors that have sayings on them either.
I was looking for the elemental gems and pretty much figured out where probably 3 of them are. In the well behind the door I can't open, in the basement of the building, there is a brick that won't do anything, but if I look at it from a standing position and hit it right, the brick vanished and becomes black. It looks like there is a secret door across from the brick. I'm thinking the 3rd is inside the giant hammer where you probably need a key or something I have not found.
I've found nothing pertaining to the pirate treasure. A few days ago I did find a body by a sunken ship, but the stupid worm gets me once the burrick pea wears off. So I didn't really get to do anything with this.
I also was able to open the door from the zombie area back to the sewers, so at least I can leave the caves when I want. And I still have not used anything I'm carrying short of creating blessed water and holy ink.
On a separate note, I think I've hit a bug. My maps have vanished. When hitting the map key, I only get the notes page. I don't think I really need them anymore as I've been through everything dozens of times. So far I'm almost 7 hours of play time, but probably double that with reloads.
