No idea of the cause, but an additional, fresh install of Thief II into a new folder seems to have fixed the problem.
Pointed Darkloader at the new copy, installed HOC2, flew through the first part and the second now works perfectly, so far!

Thanks for the quicksaves from the start of mission 2. I loaded the expert one and it failed in the same way shortly after leaving the shed at the start of the mission.
The problem seems to be when the character is facing in certain direction in various places on the map.
I have had trouble with DDfix before and uninstalled that, but the game still crashes. I suspect it is something to do with the combination of scripts that gets installed with the game, but I don't know which are essential for the game to work so I'm starting to run out of ideas.
Just seen Basil's post, may give that a try I guess.

That could actually be your problem. I kept my copies of
script.osm,
thnscript.osm &
darkhooks.dlx rather than install the ones from the mission's .zip (cut & paste originals to a temp folder / run Install in DL / copy & paste originals to Thief 2 folder so they overwrite the ones installed by the mission) - & have had no real problems.
Then again, I'm "technically-challenged" so am probably way off. Still, re-installing the originals might just work...
Best of luck, anyway.

Yes, but I didn't keep the originals of those files, and the mission is now installed, so i don't see how I can try this now.

You could d/l them from (
http://www.thiefmissions.com/scripts/) here & install those three (overwriting current ones).
However, even if that works, you may have to restart HoC2 (but you could ctrl-alt-shift-end to the 2nd part).

:( sorry it didn't get you anywhere .... and wish I could suggest something better. Here's hoping the new reinstall of T2 sorts it out for you.

I think I prefered this game when it was broken! :joke:
Seriously, a hint for the location of the key that opens the gate from the elevator on floor 0, please.

Think there's a
lockbox on the wall to the right - some way - that can be picked? :thumb:

Thanks Sagittal, that was fast!
So it can't be opened from within the elevator and I need to find another route?

Had just stopped listening to the Ryder Cup ;)
No I don't think it can be opened :erg: . I entered the lift on the ground floor having unlocked that gate so I didn't have the problem - but there are stairs!
