if you are in the room with the vault key-code machine look up at the ceiling. put a vine arrow and check that upper platform for a switch on the wall. it opens a path and extends a ladder that allows you to avoid the shaft.

Is there reason for a couple of meters ticking over on a timer, one such meter is above the door on the central pod, another IIRC was in the shower block.

I don't remember it, but FYI, you don't NEED to go back up the shaft with all the Watchers. You can just
