Most of the hammer symbols are on walls, usually about eye level. When you get very close to one and look right at it, it will highlight slightly. Check out the one on the wall behind Eleanora's grave to see what I mean. The metal clanging sound (though I don't know what it is) has nothing to do with the hammer symbols.
As for the town being closed, I assume you are on the dock side of town. Jump in the water and swim to the area near the Hammerite tomb where you got the mallet. There will be a storm drain on the canal wall above water level that you need to unlock. The key is on a Mechanist body floating in the canal.

Read the note in their room at the Lions. Is there anything you have that is referred to in that note? The note refers to stripping wallpaper, water, and roast burrick. I don't have anything related to those things. Am I looking at the right note?- prjames
EDIT: Never mind. I figured it out (e.g. it has to do with
water). Unfortunately, it gave me the third secret but didn't give me a fourth objective. How is this supposed to give me a fourth objective? Is there something I have that I'm supposed to put in the
revealed safe?

I was replying to bedwine's post regarding the Rutherwoods. I'm not sure what you mean by a fourth objective. There are 15 objectives in this mission, not counting bonuses.

Tannar, I'm referring to this quote from Unkillable Cat:

Another 20 minutes spent with this mission, and that was the clincher. Found all
16 Hammerite symbols and all
3 secrets, but was 130 short on loot.
Secret #1 is
the oft-mentioned teleporter in Shantytown.Secret #2 is
directly related to the 16 Hammerite Symbols.Secret #3 is directly connected to the 4th Bonus objective. To begin to search for it, you must know that it is something that is missing. IIRC, the starting clue is at the precinct.
EDIT: I also discovered that there's a 5th hidden objective, but it's not one you want to get, let alone complete.
So, I thought that this secret (the third secret, definitely not #1 or #2 in the note above) is tied to the "Fourth Bonus Objective", thus my question.

Ah, I see. Yes, the Rutherwood secret gives you one of the bonus objectives. You get the secret when you find the safe and you get the bonus objective when you take the jewels that are in the safe.

Yes, the Rutherwood secret gives you one of the bonus objectives. You get the secret when you find the safe and you get the bonus objective when you take the jewels that are in the safe. OK, that doesn't happen to me.
In the safe are two big jewels and a stack of coins, they just show up as treasure but no objective appears when I take the jewels. I wonder if something else has to happen besides
taking the jewels to trigger the objective.
BTW, I'm playing at normal difficulty if that affects this at all.

EDIT: Found it (it's
not in the safe but nearby). Thanks, ffox!

prjames: There is one more jewel in the collection. He/she may have dropped it.
MrMunkeepants on 7/12/2010 at 09:09
that was awesome!
thanks for releasing it right before uni finals, too  spending a couple hours in Thief-land is a pretty good break from studying, actually (though I'm not sure how much info I will have retained, I was thinking about this mission while reading)
I got two secrets and three bonus objectives; was there anything to do with the dolls or the necklaces from H?

Hi,
NOTE: I am not actually asking for any hints yet. I just wanted for you to get a picture as to what goes on in this taffer´s mind when it comes to my loose ends (which are many!) and things I thought were great or funny. I am slightly stuck at the moment, but there are many things, readables and places I am going to re-check before I ask anything.
Gonna spol cover all the rest from here...
Exploring 'The Lions' was awesome! I think I have found everything, including the "vermin bomb". I have not been able to get into the room with the humming lady in the bathtub. Dunno if I am supposed to, really...
Found a 'secret pagan glade dimension'.
Wow, cool... I can´t seem to actually do much in here, though. There is a very tempting red gem high up on the elemental painting above the entrance. I´ve managed to get up on the structures on the sides of the little stairs, but the windows into the building next to here are too narrow. Also can´t seem to find a way into any of the trees so I can get to where the apebeast is patrolling. Maybe I should light the fire in the brazier next to the Cthulhu statue? But I have no fire arrow, and lit flares do nothing to it. I´ll get back here if I can find some rope/vine arrows.
Ah, so Ginny has the other necklace that Mr. Foggbottom ordered, but she isn´t at home. I wonder where she is? Antoher victim of the serial killer, or maybe she´s on some kind of mission?
Whoa, a ghost with telekinetic powers! That´s pretty cool. 'She who speaks with the dead' can help. Ursula? She´s obviously a fraud, but maybe it´s like in the movie 'Ghost' - that she really has some abilities she didn´t know about? I want to check out her place. I know it´s in 'High Ende' because I´ve read that on the market place bulletin board. But an unfrobbable gate stops me from going there, and it´s too high to climb over.
Lol @ 'Our first kill' at Verminatrix. :cheeky:
Now I know that the 'vermin bomb' probably works somewhat like a flashbomb. I wonder if it´s crucial to the mission. Better keep it for now...
Fat Timmy is rescued. Yay! Rest here, buddy. Haha, now have The Plan! :ebil:
I got over to 'The Anvil' balcony, but I can´t seem to be able to establish myself a foothold in there. Wish I had a flashbomb! One time, I managed to rush to the lift and ride it down, taking only 1 damage along the way. Explored the lower room, then I rode the elevator to the uppermost room and got stuck there. Pushed the button, got no help. They probably thought 'let the taffer rot up there!'. I don´t blame them.
As I had used flare elevatoring to get onto the balcony railing, I had a nagging suspicion that I wasn´t really supposed to be in here yet, so I reloaded from my save that I had when I was on the railing, and just dropped down into the canal.
Speaking of the canal, I have opened one grate here with my lockpicks but the current is too strong to enter. This could be the way out that´s mentioned in 'The Plan'. Another grate requires a Public Works key which I don´t have. I´ve combed that little Public Works building but found nothing.
Also, above the canal, there is an interesting place at the end, with a hanging rope and a fly swarm. It looks like it should be possible to jump onto the rope from the other side of the canal, but I can not find the way there. The cemetery gate by the hammerite building is closed and unfrobbable, and the walls are too high.
What´s the heck is up with that ladder I brought down by shooting a button? There is nothing interesting up there.
Stuff in the city seems to change as I progress in this mission. Maybe the door gets frobbable later?
Nicked a hammer from a hammerite acolyte pedestrain. So he´s on a mission to touch hammerite seals in the city? Maybe I should do that instead? Haven´t seen any seals, though, other than the one in the letter on the ground next to The Anvil.
Hmm, here´s a key to the Great Tree Shrubbery. 'The Plan' continues on the roof of this building, but I can´t seem to able to get up there. Oh well, it feels like I should aid the ghost first anyway...
Okay, back to looking for more clues, I guess...
