The loot/secrets list will be on it's way in a minute or two. As for your other problem
There are two underground areas. You've only found one, the one with the face that you use the rubies in. Look around the caves where you found the book a bit more and once you find the other one (full of trees and treebeasts) you'll find Lord Alan.
I sent you a couple of screenshots. They should clear things up.
The "door" is the outline of the secret door that you can see in one of the walls, not one of the proper doors.
My grandson is now playing this and I am trying to "unstick" him but now I am having trouble with this spot also. In the cave with Victoria's portrait I know there are two exits into outside areas. Have gone around and around the fire pits, Victoria's portrait and the spiral "block" and cannot find either exit to the outside. Where the heck are they?
Never mind. I could have SWORN
I read that book
!!!!! :o

I need help finding a missed secret and some loot.
I have 12140 out of 12500.
What are the more common things people miss? Someone else had a list of 4 secrets he'd missed. Thanks to that I picked up two more secrets, but I'm still not done.
His list was...
door in attic
base of the marble stairs
switch in ceiling of bedroom
tile in pool
Anybody have any ideas what I might have missed?
I have looked at the loot list on the cheap missions site, but nothing stands out as the secret I missed.

Second question - There are a few places you can climb that let you peek out onto rooms from small openings in walls. I wasn't quite sure of the function of these, but then I did knock out all the guards before finding them. Is there another reason why the fortress was built with all these peep holes?

If you've seen the secrets list there's not much else I can tell you. I'd suggest just going back and checking each of them out until you find the one you overlooked.
As for missing loot, again, there's lots of little things it would be easy to miss. I don't think there's one item in particular that gets missed more often than others. One thing I recall that is a bit hard to see is a gold bottle in the staff dining room, above the kitchen but there's lots of other stuff.
I'm afraid I don't recall the storyline well enough to comment on the peepholes. I can only presume that the "master" liked to keep an eye on things. :cheeky:

The story line changed significantly during the alpha and beta testing. Originally, the peep holes were placed because the Lord Alan character was a pervert who spied on people, but the story line needed more development. When the story was changed to provide more information about Lord Alan's family background and his relationship with his mother, the peep holes were no longer mentioned in the text, but they were left in place in the architecture. Nightwalker has it right. :)
