T2 FM: Moth to a Flame (Jun. 29, 2004) - by madwolf

This is an impressive and unexpected surprise. The city design is very nice, seems like a real old world sort of place (never really been to one) I think it's just short of some of the greatest fm's because the sewers and rivers aren't too extensive. They're limited in where they can take you and I always like it when you can find yourself popping up here or there in the city and houses via sewers. I'm thinking of Washout and some others.
Many of the houses and doors are kind of shallow. No doubt this is because it is one huge city. There are still many places to go, but mostly you're wandering through the streets. There are a few very ingenious secrets you can reach with rope arrows. That's a big positive. I always like more use of ledges, also good use of boats.
I'm down to the last objective.
I never found that safe in the mayor's house. I just frobbed a painting and got the key, but then I don't usually frob all the paintings unless they light up. There should be an updated list of all the places where one might expect to find an important key in an fm. That way you'd stand a better chance of finding it yourself without having to resort to the precise spoiler directions. The mayor's place also had me stumped. I'd climbed to that window, but I never even tried to jump to the flower boxes because that sort of thing in thief usually isn't something you can walk through. I'm kicking myself now for not trying to get to the open window on my own.
Loved the clues and solution to the lost ring and the
key in the pump house.

The recessed lever for that one gate had me stumped for awhile.
The actors did a great job of fitting into the whole Thief world.

Madwolf, just wondered if there was some significance to the release date of your missions, they're (almost) exactly a year apart: 6/28/03 and 6/29/04. Birthday or something?

Well spotted! There is as it happens, but it's entirely coincidental; the 28th of June is my wedding anniversary. :D
Incidently I'm currently updating Skeletons in the Closet to ver.2, but I've also got another one going so SITC2 is on the back burner at the moment.

Excellent! Congrats on the release, I'm sure to download your mission first thing tomorrow! I've finished TDS, enjoyed it, but really hated the loading zones. They nearly ruin what otherwise is a wonderful experience.
It's great to see new FMs being released. I can't wait to get back to the good old FMs! Thanks! :thumb:

An excellent mission. Great example of a City mission done right.
Only thing about it:
The scarecrow in the park. I was expecting it because of the Mages notes and the scarecrows around I KNEW one was gonna be alive. But thats good. Only problem I had, the scarecrow that was active must have terrible vision. I ran into the park, saw him over in the corner, just walked around behind him and backstabbed him. And that was the end of him. Maybe because I was supposed to come up into the park from the tomb, but I went in through the gate and he didn't attack me until it was too late for him.
That said, I loved all the houses you could break into without having to go into the house itself. It was ALOT like "Life of the Party" like that. In through the window, grab some loot, hop back out again.
I liked the AI in the tavern too. Took me a minute to figure out what set them off.

What a mission. I really enjoy it.
I've been everywhere (i think):
I found the two secrets, found the missing ring, the floating key in the gaol (don't know where to use it), but i'm 1000 down from the total loot. Is there anything worth that much somewhere?
Thanks MadWolf for a great mission. :thumb:

alfisdrake - look very carefully around the statues in the crypt.
How do I get into the window in the warren? I can't climb the pipe. I see a ledge, but I can't figure out how to get on that either. Nothing holds a rope arrow. Do I need a box to get up on that doorway and then the ledge? I tried getting on a floating carrot, but still no luck. As I try to climb the floating carrot, it slips.
The inscrutable po -
There's a closed set of shutters straight ahead of you just after you walk under a pipe. There's a strip of wood above that window that will take a rope arrow. You can get into that window if you want to collect a bit more loot and you can jump from your rope to the top of a doorway (you may be able to mantle up onto it. I've never tried.) From there you can jump across to the ledge and follow it around to the open window.
