I dreamt about completing "Basil the Rat" bonus objective :o
Anyway, very nice mission. A bit too devilish in terms of hidden switches and such, but very impressive technically and visually.
Kind of reminds me of a few screenshots from DCE, but I can't, for the life of me, find them right now.
Great job, "mysterious guys" ;)

Finally finished this FM.
The loot is very well hidden. Plot and architecture is great. Good job.
It would be a good idea to make a bonus objective with saving the rat or humiliating that cruel man, who killed the poor rat.

1) I had to turn off EAX to understand a word anyone was saying. HORIFFICALLY BAD REVERB on EVERYTHING.
2) Level seems a little too clever for it's own good -- like the 'drop the ring' thing would NEVER have occurred to me to do... or the whole stealth that isn't stealth that repeatedly resulted in the mission 'failing' for **** knows what reason.
3) For the life of me I still can't find any frobbable book or switch to open the 'window' in the 2nd floor library/records room... and from what I've read in this thread there supposedly is one? I got the one on the pillar in the wardens office -- I'm assuming in this thread folks are referring to the room on the same floor with the window that quite obviously is supposed to open... I'll be buggered if there's a switch or frobbable book ANYWHERE in that room on any bookshelf, I've checked every single one of them top to bottom multiple times , even going so far as to leave the 'loot' open so I can see it shrink when something frobbable is in my FoV -- something I never do.
deathshadow on 10/5/2013 at 02:35
nevermind -- found it. Went past it blindly frobbing at least a dozen times... nothing... the 'area' you can frob is so blasted tiny, it's shocking it even works.
Though I had several spots that seemed to be like that, where I was certain I was supposed to be able to frob/take an item, but damned if I could actually do it without blindly jumping or mashing directions/leans until it worked.
Also, cute end recording, but it takes too blasted long. Started to fall asleep waiting for it to finish playing so I could pick it up!

This kind of thing was probably part of your problem, honestly. Slow down and look carefully. The
book switch wasn't in an unreasonable location or frob distance.
What do you mean the
end recording took too long? It's part of the story and generally the last thing you do. Based on just about everything you've said so far, I'd guess you were trying to speed run it?
Slow down, cowboy. This is Thief, not Unreal Tournament.
The testers found that the whole
"drop the ring" bit was adequately hinted at in the
book that Kevel got from the library. Did you read it?
The goosey AI bit was mentioned in the readme, but this is standard engine behavior and existed in the original Undercover mission as well- the only difference is that it was taken to a bit more of a "hardcore" level here by failing the mission.
In the end, sorry you didn't enjoy it. Be sure to request a refund for the money you spent on it from the authors.

Also, you may also want to lay off the (

But seriously, sorry you didn't care for the mission. No mission will appeal to everyone.

In case anyone gets a mission fail immediately after turning the power back on, as I did, here is what seems to have caused it.
In the two-tier cell area, the area that contains cell 6, I had knocked out the guards, and put two of them beneath the stairs that connect the two levels of cells. Moving them somewhere else before putting the lights back on cured the mission fail Otherwise, presumably, one of the cell occupants can see them.

I'm a thief player -- I don't go quickly. Though I found that if I jumped up or backed away there was more 'area' to frob -- it appears that if you go slowly too close to the bookcase, it's not as effective as taking a step backwards. Nose right up to it one book at a time? NOTHING. Step back and sweep quickly, you can see it light up and frob it easily.

I think that the dialog was drowned out by the drum track masquerading as a beating, and even with EAX off it had a ridiculous amount of echo/reverb was part of why the 2:18 runtime for what I THINK was maybe three dozen words of dialogue was just a little on the ridiculous side...

At two hours and full loot with all secrets, I wouldn't say I was blowing through it.

Yes, which is why I was right clicking trying to GIVE it to the ghost and when that didn't work assumed maybe I could walk through the ghost when I had it. I fail to see how:
A commonly successful means to do this is to bring the spirit some object that once belonged to them and to which they were strongly attached. Would tell me to drop it on the floor. If I hadn't come here and read the thread I never would even have thought of that. I'd have thought maybe the ghost would be like a second door and recycle the key mechanism for that?
which would mean you could just have the ghost stop you from going in the room instead of the bizarro-land annoying "touch of death" thing... -- would make more sense to be trying to GIVE it to them instead of "just plop it anywhere on the carpet"

Where did I say I didn't enjoy it?!? I had problems, but it was still a fun reasonably well executed concept. Why is it that whenever someone lists off having a few glitches and needing help, and people knee-jerk into "Why are you attacking it?" idiocy?
I had FOUR real issues:
1) Can't hear the dialog on the recordings, EAX off helped a little but not really. (also had to come here for the
elevator code since I couldn't understand a word
the ghost said either)
2) Never would have thought of dropping the ring... and no, there is
NOTHING in the 'library book' to say to just drop it on the floor.3) Couldn't frob the book because apparently I was too close to it... :/
4) Thanks to not being able to hear the recordings (though normal dialog was acceptable, not great EAX off) the 2:18 runtime of the final recording left me sitting there going "FINISH ALREADY!!!" --
even played directly from the .WAV file has WAY too much reverb/echo to understand a word that's being said!Does that mean I didn't enjoy it?
Did I SAY I didn't enjoy it?!? If I didn't enjoy it or appreciate it
why the blue blazes would I have finished it?But that's the typical attitude in this day and age of "status quo FTMFW" -- GOD FORBID anyone dare to list bugs or complaints about ANYTHING -- "Oh they must have hated it, look at this hater, attack the hater and stuff words in their mouth" -- because yeah, that makes EVERYTHING better!
Random Taffer there's something I'd like to say to your response, but to borrow from Auntie Em', "... and now, well, being a Christian woman... I can't say it!"
BTW, probably going back for a second run to try and see if I can ghost it so.....
Yandros on 10/5/2013 at 13:51
@deathshadow: I'll let R_T reply to you himself, but I would point out that the
elevator code was provided in the objective text, so you must have just missed that. As for our responses, well it was a safe assumption you didn't like the mission since there was nothing but criticism in your posts. I'm glad we were mistaken about that.

Interesting, I'll look into this tonight, but I'm pretty sure the prisoners are all set to be blind and deaf and neutral, meaning they won't fail the mission if they see a KO'd guard (which they can'tif they're blind). So to make sure I understand, all three guards in the cell block were KO'd, and two were under the stairs. Where was the third one? And as soon as you moved the two under the stairs, the mission didn't fail when you turned the power back on?

Your "drum track" was the normal sounds of striking things in Thief. Actually it was the blackjack sound as well as the arrow thud sound. And that part only lasts for about 30 seconds. The purpose of the rest was to create an sympathetic emotional connection with the victim and a hatred for the Warden.

Fine, but the object clearly didn't work like a normal key, since it didn't move up to the middle of the screen. Standard Thief FM behavior would indicate that it can't be used as such. I can understand why someone may be confused, I was just pointing out that the testers seemed to think that it was OK.

It might make more sense, sure.

If you read the rest of this thread, you'll see many folks reporting glitches. I have no problem with this at all. To be honest, most of the kneejerk seems to come from your original posts in this thread.
Like when you said:

Well, I was thinking that can't be true since, indeed, one of them CAN be frobbed. And rather easily too. And the bit about not being able to frob it when you're too close is not the case with mine. You can be leaning right up against it and STILL frob it.

Dude. Check the objective screen. The code is actually given in the objective itself after you hear it. (This kind of thing just screams that you weren't paying as much attention as you claim)
