This is what you should do:
Collect the Water arrow and the Fire arrow from the statue. Take either elevator down, and shoot the Water arrow at the baby (top window) and the Fire arrow at death (bottom window). Come back up again - the statue should have moved, exposing the ladder down to the vault.
The fire arrow gives you a mild explosion - it's not dramatic. If this doesn't work, come back with details.

Thanks ffox, but that's what I've been doing...
My fire arrows move in slow motion and don't explode. It actually looks kind of cool. I can shoot them into any surface. I even shot at a gaurd they just stop infront of him like bullets in "The Matrix". The guard chases me, leaving the arrow hanging in mid air!
Oh well, I have checked an early save and the problem doesn't exist there, unfortunately it's pretty early on...

This sounds like a Thief bug that occasionally shows up. Try to shoot several fire arrows at a wall - if none of them explode, it's the so-called Deathstage 12 bug. I don't quite understand why it shows up sometimes (the majority of players don't encounter this problem at all).
Try reloading an older savegame (if you have one) and check if the fire arrows still behave like that. Otherwise I fear you'll have to restart the mission :erg:
Edit: I just saw your post. Hopefully you haven't lost too much time :)

Thanks Eshaktaar. Awesome mission.
It did seem like more of a general bug than mission specific one. I am almost back to where I was. Ahead, arguably, since I could do the vault now!

Simply perfect.
i can't try to do the same anymore.

Now I know why this thread is so long and why so many people have loved this mission.
This is an extraordinary mission and I'm playing through it right now, thankfully when I need a hint it has all of the answers I need. :)

Ok, I haven't finished it yet, but I will tomorrow. I'm just too creeped out right now. :erm: It was pretty easy in the beginning, just from the start you can tell it's going to be a good mission. I started to get a bit annoyed at the buggy T2 guards though, and sound propagation problems, etc.
But once I got into Farrington's Cathedral and the tomb underneath and then mage areas, annoyance turned to paranoia and paranoia to fear. I forgot all about the rest of the level, convinced that I was no longer playing a "mansion mission." Puzzles were fun, logical, very creepy atmosphere, I kept expected things to pop up suddenly. I actually don't even remember if anything does down there, my mind must be repressing bad memories.
Then I went back into the mansion, proceded to bash everyone over the head with my makeshift blackjack.
Finally found my way under the trapdoor in front of the Death statue. I was scared to death by the giant face to greet me, then paranoid again grabbing the impaled skull (which I have no use for right now although it's sitting in my inventory along with 50 other items). And now, after getting up into the attic and into the sealed room, I'm greeted by another shocking sight.
And at this point I'm thinking, "I think I need a break." I'm gonna have nightmares tonight I know it.
Such a great mission though. The writing (as in, the stuff to read in the mission) really enhances everthing, the mood, the story, etc. And I love the small bits of comedy as well, like Benny's locker stash. So it's 2 AM, everything's quiet, and I'm too scared to play. I haven't been this freaked out since the end of the 7th Crystal. It's worse than the OM's (in a good way of course). I think I'll wait 'til tomorrow afternoon to play when everything seems safer. Anyway, great job to Eshaktaar for scaring the shit out of me. :thumb:

Yes, this mission is one of my very favorite. Very, very nice mission.
I found it to be very polished as well. BETTER than the OMs!!
