I played on Normal, so this answer may be incorrect, but the fountain to make the sponge holy is in the church. It's not a big fountain like in the courtyard, but a fountain like the normal Thief fountains, where you can turn your water arrows in holy water arrows. (That is also the way to make the sponge holy. On normal difiiculty all doors in the crypt can be lockpicked.

You have to make the fountain holy by switching from normal to holy water in the sewer. As for the sword, to find it you need to go to the area in the crypt just atop the leaning tower (with the dead Hammer at the bottom). In the room with the dead guy frescoes on the wall, look for something you can frob. There's a clue about it somewhere too.
Big Hint: Look for a guy going the wrong direction.
Bigger hint: Rope up and look for a loose stone.

thanks for the help guys, finally finished it. Great mission. Only complaint is that some puzzles were too difficult to solve alone. Surprisingly the initial part without the blackjack is really well done (played it on expert).

Eshaktaar, I just want to thank you for this wonderful mission. It helped me in two ways:
1. I finally knew what FM should be nr. 2 in my list of my 5 favourite FM's.
2. Yesterday I discovered I had to write a report in English, and it had to be ready the next day. A good thing: the report could describe everything, there were no restrictions. I didn't have the slightest inspiration, until I made my decision to bring my teacher in the world of Thief: I described the mission Ominous Bequest. I told how Garrett finds Farringtons last will, told about the Talisman of Life, told about Kadar, everything. You see, FM's have many functions. :cheeky: Now hope he likes it...

I realize this is thread necromancy of the first degree, but I've encountered a little bit of an obstacle, and opening a new thread hardly seems reasonable.
So I *think* I'm near the end of the mission. I've gotten the three gems, the sword, the will, etc., and the only objective I'm missing (barring 'escape' and 'don't kill people') is the thing about finding out more about the mages. I've been frustrated enough to check with the walkthrough, which tells me to go back to the lord's tomb, enter the sewers again, "but this time go through to the parallel sewer, climb two ladders, operate the switch and emerge. Walk round and enter the circular arena." I've entered the sewers again, and the only ladder I've found (other than the one I entered by) is the one that seems to lead to the escape. It's barred. Am I supposed to have unbarred it by now, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Thanks in advance!

Do you have the staff of life?? If not, back to the tombs..lol As for the info on mages, if memory serves its in the library safe or on top of a book case there. Either way if you have everything, the barred exit you found is the right way to go. I hope this helps! :thumb:

Stingm-
Wow, thanks for the very rapid and very accurate reply. Finished this incredible level. What a blast!

Glad you loved it. But now you must play the sequel called Broken Triad. Its even better if you can believe it. Esh is a master! I just wish he would do another mission. :thumb::cheeky:

Follow Stingm's advice! Ominous Bequest still is nr. 2 in my FM top ten, and the only FM better than Ominous Bequest is for me...Broken Triad.

I just finished this baby for the first time (at 3:30AM, no less, with a total playtime of ~4 hours). Quite frankly...what an amazing and creative achievement. The mission took some very unexpected turns with some tough puzzles, but was, hands down, one of the best I've ever played. Kudos to the author for creating this gem. :cheeky:
Next on the agenda...the sequel. :laff:
