I loved Deadly Darkness too, actually. You may hate it, but there's probably more than a few of us who loved it. :thumb:

I doubt Tomi 'hated' it! :)
I just think he meant he wanted to do a lot more with it and finally got his wish with "PA".

I really enjoyed Deadly Darkness, despite a few rough edges but Profane Ascension is a definite improvement, with some very scary moments that are excellent. It's not a REALLY difficult FM but quite frankly, it's sometimes nice to get one thats not really convoluted and full of puzzles. It was long enough to be fun with some really good stuff in it and I think you did a great job with it. :thumb:

I dealt 31k damage :p
A new personal best I think. And I enjoyed the zombie on speed. Raised every hair on my body I think :thumb:

Well done.

The she-zombie ghost got me, too. 'Didn't jump or scream, but the ol' ticker surged and I got goose bumps as she ran by, as if she ran through me. She runs down into the tunnels where the apparitions are tooling around and then vanishes down there. If you run behind her you can actually meet up with her again down there before she's gone, which will scare you again because of her speed.
I found out that if you flash bomb her a couple of times right after opening the door she'll slow down and just walk through the walls. She appears to get stuck in the wall because I can still hear her moaning where she entered the wall long after she would have normally vanished.

Just finished the mission, with full loot too (rare for me, I'll normally miss a little). A good, and rather surprising mission. However, a couple of questions unanswered.
1. There is a metal door just prior to the grandmasters suite. I can't get in. Is it possible?
2. When in the grandmasters rooms, the room on the top level straight across from the entrance (has a fire), also has what looks and sounds (metallic clang if hit) like a secret door. Is it?
3. The goblet and two candlesticks in the trapped room (roughly above the kitchen on the 1st floor). I can get these, but is it possible to escape if the trap is triggered?
4. Also initially tried roping up to the balcony, it appears just out of reach. Is there a knack to this? If possible of course.

I can't remember, but this mission is one of my favourites.
I'll try to play it again and than give you some answers!

OK Arondil, I replayed the game ...... funny the
screaming lady
never showed up  :nono:
But OK. It was fun playing it again :ebil:
1. No, it's not possible. It's just a metal door. It doesn't light up also. But there is a metal door on that level which will open when
pusging the button behind a big plant.
2. I guess that's the one with the button I just mentioned.
3. No. You cán jump or walk to the other side, but the wall still keeps at its place. So you really need to find
that button and then the traps also stop.
4. Yes. Hit the top of the wood, under the roof, with a rope arrow. Than climb on the bif wooden box and climb onto the robe.
I hope I came through for you on my promise ;)

Say "briefing video" and "screaming ghost" and it's instantly clear to me, and many others for sure, of which FM it's about. At the start there's the stunning briefing video by Izeman (sadly no longer around:erg:), that captures the feel of the Original Missions very nicely and features the voice by Loanstar (the guy who did Garrett's voice before SlyFoxx took over). And during the play, you'll undoubtly end up at the cellar door for a good freight (which is only one of the frightening classic moments, but probably the most memorable). Two powerful elements of the FM Profane Ascension by Tomi.
The story doesn't disappoint either. Garrett recieves a letter in which an old friend of his, Lacatar, Grand Master of an Academy, tells of a terrible accident that took place at the Academy. Our hero, of course, has no problem to rescue his old friend, armed with his Holy Sword to deal with the undead (that's right folks, our nasty rotten enemy has resurfaced). That doesn't sound overly complicated but the story is carefully told and expended during the course of the mission however, by reading various journals and scrolls; we learn more about the events that preceded the accident, the presence of the Hammerites (who remain unbothered by the undead) and the cause of the disaster that struck the Academy. PA really manages to put the pieces of the story together and keeping the player submerged to the end Well done Tomi :thumb:.
This mission is clearly a haunting, morbid and frightening one. We see surviving guards battling the undead, dead bodies all around the Academy rooms and corridors, and scripted events resulting in extra tension and excitement :ebil: (I won't name them here, that just spoils part of the experience). There's a nice variety of undead present, like zombies, fancy coloured haunts and ghosts. I haven't tried to ghost my way through but I guess I shouldn't bother, as the ending and the availability of a Holy Sword speaks volumes. The undead can be dealt with swiftly, leaving a lot of body parts behind. Awesome :laff: A word of caution: while the undead itself aren't that hard to deal with, it's the explosive effect of using your weapon one should pay attention to. It killed me a couple of times. I had a lot of fun with the AI btw, by firstly blowing up the mosquito infested undead in the lower levels, then luring some Hammers through the remaining swarms, and watch them being stung to death :cheeky:.
PA convinces less in terms of graphics. The Academy is clearly well designed, and there are some interesting locations present, but the design overall is a not as spectacular as in other missions of that period (f.e. objects are a bit crude). This could be due to the fact PA is a remake of the author's earlier FM for Thief Gold, Deadly Darkness.
But luckily good storytelling (involving honor, tretchery and revenge) and atmosphere (undead, freaky moments) more then compensate the less appealing visual element. Profane Ascension is just a very good mission that combines tension, undead combat, and some classic moments in FM history with a solid story that really opens up with each progression. I enjoyed playing the mission a second time :). At the start there's a beautiful briefing video and at the end a powerful villain to deal with. A fine undead fan mission, one of 2004's best releases and certainly recommended.
Sadly also the only T2 project the author ever released to the community. Tomi, you taffer, do release another sometime.
