By "Castle", I assume you mean the fortress.

There are some doors with coloured plates or ornament. These doors are locked. So, finding a key for them could be beneficial. And while you look for these keys, keep your eyes open for readables and other uncommon things.

The mission (which I have not finished) seems to rely on the player's ability to search a place and look for ways to proceed whereever some kind of obstacle appears. It's not a mission that gives you a clear path to follow, but rather rewards exploration.

Have you met any "mushroom people"? One of the keys should be not too far from their area, if my memory serves me well.

If you can't find these people, try to get below the fortress and into the caverns or catacombs. The general direction of where they are should be visible on your map. I do not exactly remember where I went in to go into the "mushroopm people area", but I think you can descend to the lower part of the open courtyard of the fortress somehow, and open a door to a corridor with one or two mushroomy guys inside. Somewhere in the buildings, you might find an elevator, and not far from the elevator, there is a ladder going down - this is one way into the caves leading you on a long path to strange whide beasts, spiders, and finally a room with magical bridges which provides an exit into the area with the green key near the top of the bridge room.

There also is a very deep well in the courtyard. This dried up well also leads to the caves, I think, but I do not know whether there is a way to go down there without falling to Garrett's untimely death.

The elevator with the ladder down next to it is in the buildings of the fortress, not deep down in the caves. In a room adjacent to that elevator, there should be a shaft and a ladder down to a room with a long and broad ramp and some large white creatures with red claws. Have you been there already?

Which puzzles in the cave have you already found, and what did you do so that "nothing happens"?

If I recall things correctly, the "mushroom people" first appeared not far from a large room with magic bridges, ladders and some elevators. This room was accessible from the caves somehow. Ladders and elevators are located in towers standing in the four corners of this room. Some traps were there as well: The center of the room contained something interesting (controls for the bridges, maybe?), and there were pressure plates around this part which triggered something harmful.

The skull opens doors in that area when frobbed. You need to carefully observe the doors as the skull will only open one door at a time. You will figure out how to progress through trial and error.
