Those two things are related. The switch moves the sarcophagus nearest that hammer symbol and reveals a secret passage.

Thanks Tannar. I was "jelling" thinking that pool just held a secret and nothing further. I noted the pyramid lamp on the floor and figured I could get it to spin, but just did not put enough effort into it. That is what a few martinis will do :joke:
Finished on Expert about 1200 short on all loot and 6 out of 8 secrets. Overall a cool game.
As almost always, I horde consumables and rashion them frugally. I had a butt load of spider eggs at the end to help take care of some nasties. Also used one fire arrow, one healing potion (I got zapped a few times here and there) and ate all my cheese.

I need a little nudge here, haven't read any of the rest of the thread for spoilers sake. I feel like I've been everywhere, I have a tons of keys, including the shrine key which I think is the only key I haven't used. The only gate/door I haven't been able to get through is the gate between the kitchen and church, I can see a ladder going down on the other side of it. Also the door to the Healing Hammer. I also haven't opened the door in the crypts that requires the gear, which seems obvious to be the location of the shield. I saw the reference in the high priests journal re: the entrance to the shrine being in the courtyard, but I'm not sure exactly where that is. I searched the area with the statue surrounded by the four flames and didn't find anything there.
Objectives I have not completed: Healing Hammer, rosary, shield, codex.
What should be my next step? Mainly I'm wondering how to access the shrine. Not too much info please, just a suggestion (or two).

As far as the shrine key goes: It's actually the key to the door of the hammer room. I'd like to know how to get through that gear door as well. I'm assuming the gear is somewhere in the sewers near the mechanist, but I never was able to find it...

@ bjack: In the room with the pool and two ladders, jump in the pool. In that pool there is an alcove. Swim down and look at the ceiling of that alcove.
@ The Mike: The gear is in the Mechanist's area (upper level) in the sewer. In one of his rooms there are three gears turning on the wall. There is a lever nearby that turns them off. Do that and one of the gears becomes frobbable. But this is only on Expert.
@ Brethren:
1. You are confusing the "Shrine" with the underground temple. The shrine is in the basement, next to the large central room with the turning gears on the floor. That is where you will find the healing hammer. It's marked on your map as "Shrine".
2. Those gates between the chapel and the kitchen don't open from this side. You will return that way later. You must first visit the guest quarters.
3. You also need to visit the crypt in the basement in order to find the rosary.
4. For the gear you'll need to go back to the sewer.

@Elentari: The giant wooden doors with the note on them only open from the other side, from within the haunted crypt. You can only enter the haunted crypt from the sewers.
