Don't use Necrobobs Necro Age Texture Pack
Use FM-Selector, it's the better choice.
You'll need a decent video card with at least 512 mb vRAM for this FM and a fast CPU (~ 3GHz) or you probably get a slideshow in some areas.

A hint: You can achieve at least three different endings (depends on how you're playing, but not on the difficulty)
Another hint: Play on 'Normal' first

I am stuck though at the very beginning. Playing normal. I can't get into anything but the barn and the shed. I have a lamp and a not from a doctor. No tools. Cannot find any tools, despite the note that says to pick up tools near the gate. The doors are all locked and no keys or lock picks. The house has a coal chute or some sort of passage under the backside, but there is no switch to open the metal door. I have climbed the silo, but cannot jump into the water below. I always die no matter what. I have been spotted by a little pagan girl up stairs in the barn.

Any small hints to get started?

Also, I have a 2GB video card and the beginning is super slow, but gets better once away from the gate.

WOW....another mission, looks like its going to be a great Christmas this year, and then we have got all those Word Challenge missions at the beginning of the new year.....just superb

Corn field is making big slowdowns. I think it is not worth so much performance.
