Sorry, I haven't read all in this thread, because my English is not the best, and I often have problems with some words. (For example, I read here something from a cuckoo. Is there the metal gear (the silver one) meant?)
No. A cuckoo is a bird ("Kuckuck" in German). In this case, it is
an artificial one, located in a "cuckoo clock". The metal gear found in
Sid Maier's workshop is either needed to get to that clock, or to get something else not far from the clock. My notes are not clear on that matter. Anyway, to get to the clock, you have to
enter Maier's strange tower and proceed through the inside where gravity is not as we know it. It may also be needed to get a clock from the top of this room first before gravity can be manipulated and another clock near the bottom of this room can be reached.Quote Posted by Gerhard Eichberger
I can't find the steps to the attic. The map says where it should be, but it isn't there - there is only a bookboard. (And in this room there is a book that looks as it would be frobbable, but it doesn't highlight and isn't frobbable.)
The steps are
behind the bookshelves. How you solve that puzzle depends on the difficulty level you play in. On easiest and medium difficulty, you have to gain access to the rooms of the Lighthouse Keeper first. You can then
approach the bookcase from behind, coming down the stairs you are looking for, and the bookcase should vanish. To get into the Keeper's rooms, you have to
find the key to the rooms. One of the Hammerites not far from these rooms might carry it on his belt, or it might lie around somewhere; possibly below the trap door in Jeremy's room, where there also is a letter from Lord Ezio. With that key, you can access the Keeper's rooms and also climb up into the attic, where you will find
the stairs down to the rear of the bookcase. On hardest difficulty level, however, there is no key for the Keeper's rooms outside these rooms. Therefore, you have to
get rid of the bookcase in a different way. You need the cuckoo mentioned above for that. There should be a cuckoo clock in the room with the bookcase on hardest difficulty level, and
of course, you should be able to use the cuckoo with the clock to make the bookcase vanish.Quote Posted by Gerhard Eichberger
I have only used one water arrow to douse a flare in the crypt so that I could go into the room besides the standing Haunt. (Unfortunately it was alarmed and looked for me. Now it is back, but it seems that it didn't go back to "unaware" but only to "slithtly alarmed" as now it starts looking for me when it hears just a bit from me what was not so before it looked for me. Is this a bug or is it supposed that this Haunt doesn't go back to "unaware"?)
I dimly remember that the Haunts in the crypt are rather dangerous compared to "standard Haunts". Possibly, they don't ever fully "calm down" again. However, if you cannot kill this one, you might be able to
lure some Hammerites into the crypt, hide in the Shadows, and let the Hammers kill the Haunt.Quote Posted by Gerhard Eichberger
In the Room of Wisdom there is a
secret way. In the room there I see some scrolls but no one of them is frobbable. Is this a bug?
No, I don't think it's a bug. My notes say that you can
just walk through one of the bookcases, without doing anything first. It's the one directly opposite the door, and it seems to be an illusionary bookcase. You should find some information there, I think.

In the Gallery I see that Anita's picture is missing. Am I supposed to look for it?
On hardest difficulty level, you can find it
somewhere in the rooms in the attic. A hint should be on Sid Maier's bed. The portrait is in the room where you can hear a woman cry when you enter that room for the first time. My notes do not state clearly whether you
have to find the portrait in order to complete the mission on hardest difficulty.
On the other two difficulty levels, there is no portrait.

I can go to the room called "The Guardian of the Entrance." What shall I do there?
You have to put something on the pedestal. This "something" is
a Black Book. You can get it by
solving the puzzle with the pirate Kash's coin first. Look for a hint on that coin on Shepard's fireplace, and look for another hint mentioning Kash's coin somewhere in the house. The coin is hidden in
Jeremy's room. You have to climb onto his desk and check out the ceiling. By returning the coin, you get lockpicks. These will open the door to
the armoury, which might have a nice sword for you. This might be useful when dealing with the Haunts.
The lockpicks should also open the door to the room of the Guardian of the Book. Inside the room,
you should find the Black Book metioned above. Go to the room of the Guardian of the Entrance, put the book on the pedestal... and watch as a Haunt appears. Luckily, this one has its back turned to you, so in case you have a sword, you can sneak up onto the Haunt and kill it with an overhead strike. After that, a small hatch has opened
in the floor near a bookcase. Go through the hatch to find an "Ankh" on a wall. This Ankh can be used to get more loot. To do that, go to the
crypts and look for a tombstone without a cross near some double doors. Use the Ankh to fulfil one of the mission goals (something with a guardian, I think) and satisfy Garrett's greed.Quote Posted by Gerhard Eichberger
I can't find the steps to the 3rd floor although they are shown in the map.
I think these steps are the ones to the attic mentioned above. If the steps you mean are some other ones, please ask again about them.

There are two doors signed as "Keeper's room". Where is the key to these doors?
I think these doors are the ones to the Lighthouse Keeper's rooms. This is part of the puzzle with the steps to the attic. Check my text further up in this post for the solution.

Where is the key for the door to the Infirmary?
There is no key for that door. To gain entrance, you have to put a signed letter into some vessel before the informary door. In order to get that letter, however, you have to embark on a real odyssey. I'll try to make it brief now...
"Anita's odyssey":1. Get an Application,
most likely from the room reserved for Garrett.2. Go to Anita's room.
Drop the application before the room, get in, and take the lantern from there.3. Read the book on
the pedestal in the Room of Wisdom.4. Go to the church to
find a mask.5. Go to Jacob's room and
put the mask onto the desk or table before the room. The door should open.6. Go into the room and
take Anita's eye with you.7. Go to the crypts. Look for
a room with an inscription on a stone plaque on the floor. A pedestal near it should have another stone plaque but without any text. Put the eye on this stone plaque.8. A hole in the floor of a room nearby should have opened.
Go down to enter Anita's tomb. Put the lantern on the chain on a wall there so that Anita doesn't have to fear the darkness there anymore.9. You get the key to the prison from Anita now. Go there.
10. Find
the dead pirate Kash (the one with the lost coin) in the prison.11. Look for a passage to
other rooms there. Once you approach a metal grate there, with blood traces leading there, you should hear Anita's death scream and somehow come through the grate.12. Look for a switch or lever
at the end of a corridor there. Use the switch/lever. A metal door somewhere here should open.13. Go through this metal door and
look for Anita's body in a trench or canal there. Take and read the explanation found somewhere near the body.14.
Save your game. I once had a bug just after this point, so make sure you can replay the following events in case that bug hits you as well.
15. Leave the room again. You should be teleported around. A card from Darko
(possibly Anita's murderer) should also appear in your inventory.
(The bug I mentioned caused the card to disappear again later, possibly being replaced by a letter from Lord Ezio, in one of my playthroughs. That's why I recommended saving the game just before getting the card.)16. Bring Darko's card
to the room reserved for Garrett and put it into the evidence chest there. You might get a candle in return.
(If you reached this step, then you do not need the saved game from step 14 anymore.)17. Go back to the application before Anita's room. The application has turned into a signed letter, and a note saying "Thank you" should be on the wall there.
18. Take the signed letter to the infirmary and put it into some kind of vessel, slot or niche there. Finally, the door should open.

And where is the key for the door to the Prison?
Anita will give it to you once you do something for her. Check step numbers 8 and 9 in the spoiler-covered odyssey above for details.

How to repair the door to Sid Meier's room?
I think you do not need to repair it. If you wish to open it, just use brute force -
the crowbar from the kitchen is just what you need in that case. You might have to use it three times until it works.
If you cannot take the
crowbar from the kitchen, look for a letter or note somewhere nearby mentioning the tool. You should be able to take the tool after reading the note.

There is a table besides two ghost guards. The table is frobbable, but I can't do anything with it. There is a scroll lying on it. I can read it, but I can't take it.
How to open the nearby door? It isn't frobbable.
That is Jacob's room. I think all the answers to these questions here are connected. Check steps 3 to 6 in the odyssey part above.

I have found a room with spiderwebs before a bookboard. How can I destroy these spiderwebs to read the books? (Actually I'm not sure in what room that was.)
The only spider webs I noted were in a room in the attic. There may be something of interest there, but it is not a book.
A hand, I think, is hidden deep in these spider webs. Whether these spider webs have to be destroyed I did not write down.

I have found about 10 candles, but they all were counted as loot. Is this a bug?
Sounds weird. I think one can find five candles by solving some importand riddles in the mission, but these candles have to be placed on receptacles on some stairs, and most likely, these candles do not count as loot. They may also have individual names. See step 16 in "Anita's odyssey" above for one of the puzzles which gives you one of those special candles as a reward.

Besides, the gamma selection doesn't function. Neither in Thief Gold nor in Thief II nor in fan missions.
[...]
I think these questions deal with technical problems with the game, which are not specific for this mission. I believe you should ask these questions separately in the "Thief Series General Discussion" area of the forums, (
