I'm new to the forum, but I have been playing Thief for awhile now, but here is just my two cents on this issue...
I know most people loved this level, and a few didn't, and I'm in the majority that loved it, but having said that, here are a few things I feel about this...
I think the fact that this is Saturnine's first level is irrelevant when it comes to deciding whether or not it should be rated gold, and is also irrelevant as far as the level's design expertise, and here is the reason: "Known Knowledge and Content".
For example, in order to fairly compare a level of quality, you have to compare the level to "other" levels at the time period it was created, and I believe that The Inverted Manse is slightly better then this, but not much at all, it's very close.
However, I believe that Toni Hollming and Markus Lappalainen are the two most talented designers this place have ever seen and ever will see, and the reason is by evaluating the quality of their levels to the current ones at their time.
When Circle of Strain was released, there was no information to study, no other type of data to go on, to learn from, at a time when levels were simply square blocks, Hollming and Lappalainen, through their incredible natural talent, created true works of art that were so far beyond the current technology, the gap was so wide!
But today, levels are much closer in quality, and that is because there is so much DromEd information out there, the fact that a great level is released is devalued.
Markus's first level, Circle of Strain, was extraordinary, and Markus didn't have any info to go on, except his imagination, same with Hollming. But the level designers today have so much information to learn from, is it any wonder they are so detailed?
Anyway, that's just my two cents.

Well, THANK YOU!
I woud like to correct Komag's statement, I'm am working on 5 different missions on CoSaS. Three of them are fully mine, rest are partly done with other designers. It's like "everyone does everything" -style in the team.
I wouldn't say I've done much progress since the CoS times. Sure I've learned much new, but I have to raise thumbs for these new guys. They are awesome designers. The gap is small these days and it's really nice to see how high is the current quality of FMs.

I've just finished T7C, I LOVED act 2. Oh, and the nursery scared the hell out of me. I was expecting to see something, but it was just that spooky laughter from behind and those noises. DAMN that was cool. Act 3 was disappointingly short (and safe. Couldn't you even give us a haunt?) But the "movies" at the intro and end where very well done. BUT Saturnine you had better have a sequel coming! Cause The ending was a bit to open and left too many things unexplained. For example where are the other six crystals, what was in the book, and what did Garrett do with it.

Spoiler:
Like how did the count not find that on him when he was caught. And who was murdered? I mean how did they find Garrett guilty of anything, there was no hard proof as it sounded or witnesses.

Great! I finished it and liked the ending. But I do have a question about it:

Spoiler:
I got to roam around before the audio was triggered. I went were the cells were, went into the small corridor behind the judge, and then stole the gavel from the judge. My question is: it looks as if you can go up onto the ledge where the statue and another set of doors is. Is it possible to get up there? It looks as though you can, but I can't steal anything other that the gavel. I thought it was a nice touch to anotherwise abrupt ending.

Sounds like something went very wrong there, you should not have been able to go anywhere! Were you playing the patched version?
Didn't you think something was wrong when then corridors leading to the cells are all textured in jorge?
Right thats it, I'm going to have to patch it again, so while I'm at it what else needs changing?
Do you guys think I should put the attic key in the library safe? that would be much less annoying to find.
I'll give it a lot more variations in ambients, what else? Where were the dodgy textures I've heard about?
Do you think I should make Act 3 bigger? with haunts and scary stuff?
What does T7C need? (Be kind)

NO NO NO No NO!!! Leave the end in! It's kind of like an Easter Egg! I like it and it makes the end more interesting, especially for those who DIDN'T like the ending!
Keep it, I say and all the others you can patch.
Really, the last part is like a bonus!

That must be a rare bug, because neither I nor anyone else so far has been able to run around during the "ending" - it's an in-game movie like part one.
Snerticus on 1/12/2001 at 04:59
I can move around in part one also, but when I do, the cutscene at the river doesn't show - so I have to stay still and enjoy the scenery. I'm pretty sure I downloaded the patched version, I just downloaded it two days ago.

Regardless, it put some adventure into the ending and I enjoyed it. I went through the ending like normal, but then saved it and decided to go back and try to walk around.

Yes, it is attractive, but it seems a bit of an anticlimax after the very involving Act 2.
Overall wow, especially for a first release I did feel a little like I was lacking direction some of the time though. Perhaps I just wasn't paying enough attention or I'm used to being babied by missions but I sometimes felt a little like I was acting somewhat randomly - I wasn't sure exactly what my next move should be. I suppose that's because the plot is very linear, must do A then B then C etc, so if you don't grasp one step then you've hit a brick wall as it were. Perhaps for those of us who are a little dense at times it might be nice to drop some additional hints about the steps around the building so that a directionless player might stumble across them as they explore?
