regardng the basketball
would I be correct in saying it's not an easter egg itself, it's inside another easter egg ? and you need to find a secret before you even get a hint about the easter egg ?
and I found a holy mushroom, but I keep dying shortly afterwards - I lose traction and fall off and I can't see anywhere obvious I might manage to put a crate and rope arrow combo, am I missing something or is it just a case of dogged perseverance ?

holy mushroom - yes, I tried 3 times to keep traction and get mushroom. Its a little bit tricky but no need of special trick.
basketball - yes, you are right if you mean the right place. If it is the right place you will see basketball without any doubts ! ;)

yep there was a basketball, right in front of me, so I guess I found the right place, I shall have to go back for that mushroom

If you see a real basketball laying on the floor (you can pick it too) then yes you were at the right place. :)
