Oh, I know all about mantling off a ladder to make no noise, it is better than jumping by the way... I was just talking about it being unlikely that you could jack a guard right in front of another one and it not being noticed... shouldn't happen.

Someone hotmailed me to tell me they quit my FM after about three hours because they couldn't find their way out of the caves, and found it excessively difficult. Does anyone need a walkthrough made available to get through the caves? All of the beta testers made it through without mentioning getting lost, so I never gave it much thought. I'm going to be sending the taffer a walkthrough of the caves, so if anyone else wants it just let me know.

My archive has slots for hints and walkthroughs, so if you'd like to mail one to me I'll be happy to host it.

Thanks for your help so far... I was trying to scale up the wrong high wall before!
I'm really enjoying the caves (awesome piece of work). However, I'm now feeling like a complete wuss because I can't seem to get a difficult jump right and keep falling to my death. It's the big cave where you have to jump to the centre rock (with a little platform). I sometimes manage to grab hold of the edge of the platform, but any subsequent movement throws me backwards off the ledge. Any hints on exactly where to stand to begin the run and jump?

Originally posted by uncadonego Hey Goldie, one thought occurred to me. Did you perhaps destroy your rope arrows without noticing the first time around? Sometimes I accidentally use a broadhead instead of a water arrow and attract all kinds of unwanted attention. If you inadvertently used the rope arrows to kill spiders, it would destroy them like regular arrows.
If anyone else runs into some problems seeing in the water tunnels, remember, that's why I included all the flares in the inventory at the beginning. It lights your way down there beautifully. (Yes, those things actually do serve a purpose! LOL!)
I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying the mission. Thanks for all the compliments on the architecture everyone!:) I always use my sword on the spiders. Slash those darn things! Hehe, offcourse I get a little hurt when doing that but it's more fun.
I didn't use any arrows at all, so it's still a mystery why they were gone. Maybe some taffer in here took em? Nightwalker, was it you? :)
Hehe don't think I've EVER used a flare, hehe.. My eyes are my light, eh sometimes..
:)
Well enough thieving for today, gotta make my homemade lasagne soon, I'm expecting guests tonight :)
uncadonego on 29/3/2003 at 12:42
Goldie, next time just throw the lasagna pan into the middle of the spiders, and when they are busy eating the lasagna, sneak past them with no damage.
Kimberley, the key for most of the jumps is to back up a half step before making the jump. You might get the impression it's best to line yourself along a straight edge of a platform, but if you line yourself squarely in front of the pointy parts of ledges you'll do better. You bounce off of solids, so if you miss, you fall backwards enough to fall off. When you stand on the column facing the gap and that center large column, look straight ahead instead of down when you run and jump. Use your instincts to hit the space bar to jump on the last step. If you make it to the lower ledge of the center column, you're still good. Ignore the step looking thing. Line the center of your gem on the point in the middle at your waist. Walk up to it as close as you can. Make sure the ledge is perfectly horizontal in your view. Back up a half step. Then look straight ahead and do the run/mantle move. That should do the trick for every tricky mantle spot. Now, before you save, once your on the top of that center column, hop and see if you make footfall sounds. Then you know you're really standing on top, and not stuck halfway in a solid (a Thief bug). Save after every successful hard spot. Aim for the center of the column when you run to make the wide jump Kimberley.
Learning to square up the horizon---then finding the jutting out most point of a jump----then getting as close as you can and backing up a half step before the run/mantle----that's the key to getting out of these caves beginning to end in five minutes.
Epithumia----thanks. I didn't know that. I may make such a notation.

Thanks Uncadonego - that was brilliant advice, although I cracked it two minutes after posting the message! (typical huh?) I've now almost finished the mission - and I have to say it ranks amongst the top 3 I've ever played - and I've played them all! It's awesome - the story, the architecture, everything. I've finished the Secret Area and found Delphos, and cracked the 5000 loot. Now I just need the potion, and I'm stuck again (I've been stuck more times on this mission than I can remember). I read the scroll from the Doctor saying he had one spare vial in his downstairs closet - but it's not there. I've searched his house from top to bottom, plus all the other houses, and I have to say I'm flummoxed! Please help - one last time I promise! Thanks

Just thought I'd let any would-be ghosters know you don't need to BJ anybody to get everything - at least, I didn't need to, and I think I only missed that kitchen safe on my first run through (expert).
Those two noblemen and the guard next to the third house had me stumped for a while, until I realised
you could shoot out the mushroom with an arrow!
Hmm.. that might not fit the technical definition of ghosting, but at least no one was alerted (apart from all those spiders.. and that was only for a few seconds as I sprinted past :cheeky: .)
Once again, great mission uncadonego!
uncadonego on 29/3/2003 at 13:38
Stand directly in that closet downstairs under the staircase. Face looking directly out of the closet. Look above the door and jump. As the switch hilights, frob! Might take two or three tries.
Then return to the sinkhole and you're done.:)

I'm going to be sending the taffer a walkthrough of the caves, so if anyone else wants it just let me know. First of all thanks for giving us taffers a new FM to enjoy! I haven't finished it yet, but I made it past the cave! :laff:
I didn't have any difficulties in finding my way through the cave. I thought that the right route was pretty clear, but I understand those who felt that the cave adventure was a bit too difficult. I got pretty frustrated with it myself, and I consider myself an experienced taffer. The cave itself is quite magnificient :thumb:, but I think that the source of frustration mainly stems from the Dark Engine oddities :eww: -- finding just the right places to jump, making sure you're not stuck half-way, bewaring bounce-backs etc. -- so that the player kind of has to play against them more than doing actual adventuring. The margin for error is very small. So in that sense I suppose the cave could've been a bit easier.
Well, I saved a lot, and finally made it through, and things are really looking up now! Good work!
I hope you'll build another one! :thumb:
