Hmmmm... I think I know what it is. Some others have reported that already as well.
When you pick up Shardangh, he goes into your inventory. As like all other inventory items, the icon fades after a while.
In that case you have to scroll through your inventory again to make the image show up.
And then you can drop him.

You can use flares which you'll find near the burrick cave.

i frobbed a switch in the building near the lava,but cant find what it openend,the wall downstairs in one spot makes a sound when i hit it
