I did intend for a puzzle-object to be down there, but after working it all out, I realized the player can't easily get out, so I decided to do nothing with it.

thank you nickie; this is a puzzler of a mission (I guess I'm out of practice)
what I really needed to do to progress, after dropping the magical barrier, was check the front door! :tsktsk:
everything fell into place after that :D
I ended about 200 short of all loot, but got all secrets, two bonus objectives, and a crap in the pants when I found the lost beta tester! :eek:

The cookbook doesn't exist on Normal and Hard because you don't need it.

I'd appreciate some help.
I have: Crust's key, Stubbs key, a key marked with a skull, basement key, ornate knife, green jewel, a cookbook and no idea what to do next.

OK - first things first. You need to kill the demon. There are some hints how to do this but basically it involves the green gem, Shardhang's body, and a hook. After that you'll be able to access the main doors which unpick.
