T2 FM: What've You Found Little Fly. 5 July 2012 - by Xorak

I've gotten much farther than I was; alas, I've run out of ideas again...
I made the potion to unlock the box, put the gem where it does the most good, killed the demon, wandered around in the tower, found some inner piece, got into the inner tunnels, poured a demon soul into a jar. But now I'm just wandering aimlessly.
I saw a face that wants to walk around. I thought this might have something to do with the Karras' Child in the west (?) wing of the mansion, recalled something about being able to pour a soul into that irritating, little robot; but I have no idea how I can connect one to the other. I also found a dead guy who will help me if I get him out of his magical cell; here I haven't even a clue.
I found a ratty ape who plays piano, and I surmise that the bleu cheese I also found connects up; but I don't know what to do with him even if I can get his cage door open -- take him to the despondent guy sitting on his bed?
And of course, I haven't found any way to open the lockbox that fell out of the brick wall.
Can someone at least set me on the right course with a judicious hint or two?
Thanks,
Dafydd

Playing on Expert ? Good Taffer !
I assume you have poured only 1 sould into 1 jar. There are 2 more needed.
The face on the wall can help you - and the
link to the Karras Child is correct. But you miss something:
You need to pick up a demon-head in the InnerTunels that will serve as the link. You realized already that you do not need souls - but blood ?
There is one other obvious place to check that will give you #3.
... and a few more things to do before you can free the dead mage.
Regarding the ratty-ape : Feeding it with the cheese alone would accomplish nothing else but making it fat. But you want something else to happen - which the creature does not like.
Read the book in the cave
and find some potion in the rooms of the author. Then you can take care of the
lockbox that dropped out of the wall.

lol, I was thinking when I was responding that I need to write out a walkthrough, because I'm starting to forget the puzzles to my own mission.
But I just checked the mission to make sure, and on normal there is no
magnetic hook puzzle. It was one of the last changes made to the mission in the 1.1 version. I don't think you tested that version, because we were mainly working out the game-crashing bugs as well. :thumb:
Oops :D

In the cave? The Burrick cave? I don't see
any book there. I even temporarily KOed both burricks to take a close look:
No book that I can find.
I have the
scalding blood, but I have no idea what to do with it. Yeesh!
Cheers,

The cave he referred to is the cave where the ape is playing the piano. Then find the room of the person who wrote the book in there.
Did you go to the top of the inner tower and receive the objective to 'Find a way up.' That is the next step you have to do.
There is a locked strongbox on the top floor of the eastern wing. You need to find the key for it to proceed onwards. If you're looking for a hint for the key's location, you need to read a scroll behind a secret panel on the top floor of the western wing. The panel and switch is in the same location as it is in the original game. Further hint: the panel is in the room right before Banassa's bedroom.
Here's a near spoiler of where the key is: look around the outside of Versaw's bedroom.

Something seems amiss...
I already have the ring (charged). I went to what I think is the "inner tower" -- the area where the mage is held captive. I stood under the sparkley hole, activated the ring, and floated up; I steered myself into the hole... where I bounced around for a few seconds, then fell back to the ground. Mind, I was actually inside the hole... I just couldn't get through the barrier; and then I fell back.
I received the "objective completed" chime, and the objective to "find a way up" was checked -- but the hole still sparkled, and I was stuck at the bottom (with two health shields of bruises).
What am I to do now? I can't use the ring a second time; it traps me. Was I supposed to get up inside that hole? I tried it eight or nine times, each time with the same result: The objective claims the barrier is gone, but I can see it, and I never could get through it into the upper room.
What am I doing wrong?

By the way, I'm getting not just a crash or two, but multiple crashes in quick succession. Often, I'll crash trying to save; then when I try to reload, that slot has become empty. I try to load the previous slot, and I get repeated crashes again. I sometimes must go back two or three saves before I finally get one that will load.
It's really getting to be a drag: I want to finish the mission, but it's fighting me, and fighting dirty!

I don't know what to say. It seems like it's really bad luck. I have gotten stuck going up once or twice in a hundred times, but in almost all cases I make it up there okay. Did you try the
ring from different starting points. Sometimes the player gets too much momentum if they start the ascent too far away from where the invisible camvator upwards begins.
If you're making it inside the hole, the barrier should be gone. If the barrier was there it should stop you from even entering the hole. It's an invisible barrier, the magical swirly cloud never actually disappears, nor is the actual barrier.
Also, when you say 'steer' do you mean you're trying to guide yourself? If you don't touch anything, you'll fly up on your own. Maybe pressing keys just slightly moves the character enough to mess up the ascent.
I know the crashes are terrible. I don't know what else to do at this point. The mission is really pushing the limits of Dromed and it clearly doesn't like it. Are you running V1.1? I know some people were still getting crashes in it.

Xorak, I still don't understand: Is the camvator actually supposed to lift me up high enough that I can actually enter the room above? I mean, actually inside that room, as opposed to merely being in the hole?
I get into the hole; the camvator stops with me still at a level where my head is about the same height as the lip of the hole; I try to mantle up, but nothing happens; but after a few moments bobbing around up there, I suddenly plummet back to the level I started at before activating the ring.
Can you please describe exactly what is supposed to happen when I activate the ring?
Success! I finally figured out the problem, and it's pretty bizarre...
When I walk around in Thief, my normal gait is crouched and using the high-speed movement; this moves me about as quickly as regular walking (a little faster, actually); but being crouched, I often miss getting killed by traps and such that shoot high. (It's also quieter, less likely to be heard by AIs.) In the present instance, I walked into that lower chamber crouched and immediately activated the ring. For some reason, if I'm crouched, I don't get taken through the hole and into the room (!); but when I stood up and tried it, it worked fine, several times in a row.
Another couple of tests: I tried standing up, jumping, then crouching again just before activating the ring from a crouch; this was to determine if it was a one-time thing; feet slightly embedded in the floor, perhaps? But no, it wouldn't take me through the hole. Then I tried starting on the camvator in a crouch and standing up while it was in motion. (I couldn't tell whether Garrett actually rose, since I was floating upwards anyway.) Again, that didn't work. So the rule seems to be that you must be standing up before activating the ring, or it won't work.
Given that I can ride a lift up or down, crouched or standing, with no problems, I'm puzzled why this particular camvator is so averse to Garrett riding it while crouched. It's weird. :weird:
(If this is normal behavior for a camvator -- that you must be upright or it won't work -- then there should be a plaque or something in the chamber that says something cryptic about standing tall and not effacing oneself or somesuch, since we don't actually know going in that we're about to ride a camvator. But I don't recall ever having this problem in any other camvator sequence; and as I said, I normally play Garrett in a perpetual crouch.)
Anyway, problem solved; and if anyone else has this issue, try standing up before using the ring.
Thanks,
Dafydd
