The need to be standing was something that came up in testing, but there's no real way to force the player to initially be standing. That would've been the best option, if it existed. But your solution is a good suggestion. If I do another version in the future, I'll try and work it in somewhere.
The reason the crouching doesn't work is because the camvator is set to a specific speed, and it does seem to move upwards at a slower speed when you start crouched. So the 13 seconds that it should take to successfully get all the way up there will take longer.
And sadly mantling doesn't help to get you up there because Garrett's holding an invisible item, which stops the player from being able to use random items while flying up, and to give a better illusion of being ghostly.

Where do I find Shardhang's body? . Also, I can't find a way upstairs - I found the room with the demon and the hooks, but I can't pass the force field.

Shardhang is in the room just before the demon and the hooks. To get upstairs go back down to the lab room, can't remember it's name now but it's the big room with the elevator, and tables with bodies. Go down to the cellar bit and look round there.

I looked around the cellar, but all I found was the scroll that talks about the hook. I didn't find the body in the room before the demon, only the bloodstain on the ground.

The room on the same floor and immediately before the demon and force field room should have a bucket of blood and a body on a table and hooks on the wall.
There's a bloodstain on the cellar floor by some barrels in the far right corner, but coming down the stairs to that room, if you go left at the bottom of the stairs, there's an opening leading to a ladder. Just to make sure we're talking about the right stairs, they go left and up to a gate which can be opened from the other side or down and round to the cellar. But getting up to the demon is no use to you if you haven't got Shardhang's body.
If you haven't got those things, then I don't know but probably something to do with scripts or technical stuff like that which I don't know much about.
