T2 FM: What've You Found Little Fly. 5 July 2012 - by Xorak

Except, I'm not sure where my FM saves are. I assumed they'd be in the FM_Backups folder inside my Angelloader folder, but there's nothing in there.

FM saves are stored in
{Thief 2 folder}\FMs\{FM name}\saves while a mission is installed. After uninstalling a mission, the current saves are in a
.zip file in the same folder where the mission
.zip (or sometimes
.7z or even
.rar) files are stored. The zipped up saves have names like
littleflyv1.1.FMSelBak.zip, the "FMSelBak" part showing that this file contains save games instead of the FM itself (which would be named
littleflyv1.1.zip in this example).
But I think we might find our elusive switch without analyzing a savegame now.
I have just played v1.1 of the mission (easiest difficulty level), and then even poked around in the mission with DromEd. Depending on difficulty level, the switch can either be located behind the
left bookcase on the southeast wall (easiest and medium difficulty level), or behind the table in the corner to the left of both bookcases (maximum difficulty level). That should be the northeast corner, then.
The Creature Observation Room is recognizable by the Crayman in his cage (and the dead
Burrick remaining from feeding the monster/Crayman before). While fortuni's description ((
https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139673&p=2494093&viewfull=1#post2494093) post #450) mixes up the two bookcases, his screenshots show the correct "assignment": Switch behind the
left case, moves
right case.
Anyway... If you approach the
left bookcase, then look behind it from standing or crouching to the left of the case, you should be able to see the tiny switch on every difficulty level except for the hardest one (Expert or whatever it's called in this FM). However, you might have to move around a bit until the wretched switch lights up. On Expert, however, you have to look for the switch between the table to the left of the bookcases and the northern wall. I did not play the mission on Expert, so I don't know how easily the switch can be seen there, but Ricebug's description probably means that he could not
see the switch behind the table, but blind-frobbed the table, and by chance frobbed and used the switch there. Maybe Lady Taffer also needs to grab around the table in order to find the switch, I don't know. And maybe the switch thing might be a bit different if playing v1.0 of the mission as well. I admit that I'm too lazy to check that now.
Last but not least... The "Cherub boy" (the small golden child in Familius Pox' room, I guess) did not move when I approached him, no matter how close I got to him. I had to haul my butt (or rather Garrett's one) into the Observation room myself. (I thought that maybe Ricebug's solution might be talking about
another switch somewhere near the Cherub, which would activate the Cherub so that he/it brought Garrett to the Observation room, but I could not find such a switch there. Oh well...)

Ha, it looks like I've never finished this mission in its time. Fixing it now, but stucked and walkthrough doesn't help:
Quote:
I found a hallway off the round room with the magic ward in the ceiling. There's a man inside a
room, asking me to save him. What do I do?
Once you've flown up through the hole in the ceiling
WUT?! Flown up? I surely am missing something important. It looks like I need to get to the magic barrier in the ceiling. But how? Ghm... fly? Can I fly?
Does anyone remember this place?

And that would explain the oddity, I just checked in Dromed but didn't bother checking whether the switch was there on all difficulties, my bad, sorry Lady Taffer.

Yeah Ricebug's walks can be a bit anemic, giving the minimum amount of help as possible, it also doesn't help that he only ever made walks for players on expert level, so if keys, loot, levers etc are in different locations on normal or hard his walks can sometimes be next to useless.
I'll see if I can put a modern lootlist together in the next few days, my lootlists give the locations of keys, loot and objectives on all difficulties, but have to admit I don't always take note of different locations for levers and switches, but will make special effort for this mission.

Yes.:cheeky:
Not exactly the answer you wanted? Okay then...
My stinking old notes say that one needs to get a
Jeweled key from under some stairs in the Rumford manor first. Furthermore, there should be a box in the
rooms of the Conjurer who should be killed by Garrett later on. I think the appropriate goal appears once one has read something about this Conjurer's plans in his rooms. I also think these rooms are located behind
a monster that seems to be some weird interbreed between a one-eyed cyclops and a large apebeast. It is standing guard near some stairs leading up to the topmost level of the manor, but can be blackjacked from a position in one of the arches that lead to some rooms nearby.Once that monstrosity has bitten the dust (or at least been rendered unconscious),
go up the stairs, open the door (possibly with the lockpicks) and search the place. Be wary of the weird creatures moving around in the rooms there. They should react well to your Blackjack, though. Anyway, read whatever you can find there, then look for
a box there. Once you open it with
the Jeweled key, you might see some portal-like structure inside. Grab around blindly in order to get
the Conjurer's ring.Go back to the place where you shold fly, the one with the
circular shaped magical thing near the ceiling, and with a side passage leading to the imprisoned man. You have to use the ring in the room with the magical thing somehow, then you should be able to fly somehow. Unfortunately, my ancient notes are not very specific on how to do that stunt with the ring and the flight. But from up there, you should be able to continue your mission, my notes say.
Let's hope this has not changed for v1.1 of the mission, as the majority of the notes were made when I had only played v1.0 so far.

Be aware that there are two versions (v1.0, v1.1) of this mission, and that it has been said that v1.1 has some significant changes to some of the puzzles, especially the one where you had to create and use a
magnetic hook to proceed. If you don't want to bother with v1.0, it would be wise to state near the beginning of your walkthrough/lootlist that you were using v1.1 only. Otherwise, you might one day find some angry players camping before your house, having pitchforks, feathers and hot tar ready.:ebil:

Hmm. I have a ring (Ring with a flawless bloodstone) that I got from the box-portal but the Garrett comments "it is empty and does nothing being put on the finger".

Yes I usually do state which version I play tested, especially if there is known significant changes (think Cardia missions), and I try to always play test the latest version.
But thanks for the heads up.
PS. Just checked and all Thief Missions, The Keep and Darkfate host v_1.1, but Taffers Paradise still hosts V-1.0, I'll send a PM to Lord Soth, hopefully he can update TP.
PPS. Want a quicksave? :cheeky:
PPS2: I've read in the forum that if playing v_1.0 some of the readables do not work correctly, so all players should play v_1.1 anyway.

This seems to happen only on higher difficulty levels, which I have not played yet. Apparently, you have to "power up" that ring before using it. Ricebug's walkthrough mentions that the ring
must be used "on elemental trapped in glass box". I do not know where that elemental would be, though. The result of "powering up" the ring should be a name change to "Ring with a Shimmering bloodstone", and then you may finally
fly in the room with the magic circle on the ceiling, near the Mage who wants to be free.fortuni, my investigations with DromEd show that the mission has significant changes depending on difficulty level, just like the one with the ring, or that with the elusive switch Lady Taffer had trouble with. This explains why Ricebug's walkthrough does not fit every now and then. I'm afraid some labour will be required to produce a good walkthrough and/or a loot list which includes usable items in the mission.:erm:

Thanks. It worked. This mission could really use some walkthrough though.
