If you go down where Golik is before getting the book and gaining access to the water shrine, there will be a stone block in place stopping access to the throne room. Once you have done these two things, the block recedes and you can go down the stairs. I think that is mentioned in Golik's journal but I can't remember for sure. :D

So embarassing this - I can't get past the very first puzzle - the 'offering to the sun god' who will light the way'. A frobbable carved stone with an offering bowl on top that doesn't light, and nothing else I can think of.
Could some kindly soul please drop me a small hint?

Heh, don't feel bad. I've hit missions like that too. WHere you're running in circles just trying to find the way out of the starting area. And, typically it usually turns out to be something idiotically simple that you managed to overlook. lol Happens to everyone at some point I think. At least you were brave enough to ask!
The puzzle you're referring to, I believe is right at the start? In which case, if I recall correctly you need to shoot a fire arrow at the bowl. Although I could be wrong. It was something similar. If that doesn't work, try using something else that relates to the sun (gold, fire, etc)
Hopefully thats enough to get you started. Unfortunately, I can't remember specifically and I seem to have moved the file so I can't reload the mission. If that doesn't work, maybe someone else can give you better instructions.
