Somehow, oddly, Thief 2 got wiped away from my system about 6 months ago. No idea how or why. I just went to play it one day and it wasn't on my system; very strange. I did battle a virus back then, so maybe Norton wiped out the directory? Or, it was around the time I was trying the HD Mod, which I'm pretty sure I uninstalled. Maybe uninstalling that resulted in me accidentally uninstalling the entire T2 game, or maybe Norton flagged it all as a virus and uninstalled everything.
Regardless, I tried to re-install T2 from my discs a few months ago, but I couldn't get them to install (on Win 7), as the installer wouldn't work at all. Never had that issue before, but oh well.
At any rate, I bought the Steam version recently (a month ago) so I could play. (It was on sale for only $1.75, so I figured why not.) Sadly, it seems like basic, vanilla T2 because the max video resolution I can set it to is "800 x 600 x 16." Not cool! So, I tried getting the New Dark patch and/or Tafferpatcher on my system a few weeks ago, but as soon as I double-clicked the executable to install, Norton anti-virus immediately popped up with a red alert saying it was a bad file and immediately deleted the file from my Desktop on its own. Norton has never...ever... done that before for any program... and I've installed a lot on my system over the years. Anyone else have this issue? Is/was there a virus in the installer? I wish I could remember which file I was trying to install; my hunch is that it was Tafferpatcher.
For Thief patch-related stuff, and other programs with small user bases, I've had Norton tell me over the years things like, "This program may be unsafe as there are not very many users using it, are you sure you want to install it?"... to which I give permission. This is the first time that Norton flat-out went rogue crazy on a file, though, deleting it within a second while not giving me any options, as if it was mega-unsafe.
Since I have the Steam version, I assume there is hope for me to get widescreen, hi-res working? Someday I would like to play T2 again. It's just too frustrating to play on 800x600x16 when you're used to higher resolution with wider FOV. Are the T2 patches (e.g., New Dark, Tafferpatcher) found on TTLG are reliable, virus-free and safe? Note: I can't/won't do the HD Mod because my computer can't handle it (framerate plummets).

Not an expert on this stuff, but shouldn't you be able to temporarily disable Norton so you can install Tafferpatcher/T2? FYI, you can use Tafferpatcher as your installer program, and use your original discs.
Also, make sure you're not installing to the Programs Files folder, that can screw things up pretty bad. I wouldn't worry about any of the Thief patches containing viruses - I've never heard anyone claim that before, and it would have been discovered a long time ago if that was the case.

actually, TFix has been flagged as virus by norton a couple of times in the past, so this is no news. it's a false positive of course - either disable the antivirus or add an exception.

Do not use Symantec/Norton. It'll wipe half the stuff you download and slow your PC down for good measure.

Have to agree with that. We are forced to use Symantec by corporate IT at work, and when a scan kicks in (which I'm unable to reschedule, it's set by IT admin), my laptop becomes so slow as to be unusable for 10-15 minutes. At home I use Avast (free) and Windows Security Essentials.

I used to worship Microsoft Security Essentials until they deliberately made an update for it this April that essentially crippled Windows XP machines so hard that they'd work (slowly) for one minute and completely freeze for the next five. Once I uninstalled MSE, it was back to normal. I daren't put it in my Win7 rig.
I hear people are satisfied with Avast, and Malwarebytes is a good supplement.

I started using Malwarebytes several years ago and haven't looked back. I'm so happy with it that it's the first time I've ever actually paid for any sort of virus protection.

We're running Win7 and 8 and haven't seen that with MSE, FWIW. And I also use MalwareBytes to scan when I think there may be a problem, but I couldn't leave it on all the time as it seemed to be really touchy and pop up false positive alerts a lot more than I like.

I use Norton, windows 7 and have never had a problem. I think what your seeing is that the file is untrusted because its so new and unknown. You can easily still install by telling Norton its trusted. If you check the tfix posts you will see my post where it happened to me.
The next time it happens just choose install anyway or actions to pop a menu to okay it.;)

Ahh, cool... thanks everyone! Good to know. I've never really had a problem with Norton, that I've noticed. My computer seems to run pretty quick, and I make it scan at times when it won't interrupt me. I just renewed Norton a week or two ago, so I'll re-evaluate after the renewal year is up :) Never heard of Malwarebytes, but will check it out. Thanks again! :thumb: I need me some Thief 2. Having withdrawls...
EDIT: Okay, got it patched up and the higher resolutions working. Awesome! The cinematic movies stopped working upon patching, though... so I'll need to figure that one out a bit later when I have some time to troubleshoot.
