Playing once again on expert and I need a little help completing the "piece together what happened to Port Aerinth" objective. Is there a readable somewhere that I missed? I'm pretty sure I got everything. . .
Well, after a second playthrough and reading everyone's take on the story, I'm finding that I enjoy it even more. I still have a few problems with it, though, like why the north gate is locked and guarded by a creature after you get back from the mountain. Wouldn't the creatures be wanting to escape that way?
Also, why weren't they in the town already when Garrett showes up? What were they doing hanging around the mountain?
After you get back into the town and flip that switch in the power plant it appears to open up the portal to the creatures' world, but how does it do that?
In various readables, some of the characters are referred to as "brother," such as Brother Vorenthius, etc, but I'm a little unclear as to who exactly they are. Are they Keepers? Hammerites?
Lotsa questions, I know, but any help and illumination would be great!

completing the "piece together what happened to Port Aerinth" objective. Is there a readable somewhere that I missed? I'm pretty sure I got everything. . .There are
5 or 6 readables that you need to read to complete that objective. Here are the ones I remember off the top of my head: In the Library near the sailboat; in the hanged man's house; in the cave past the creature near the sarcophagi under the mountain; in the attic above the street in Old Town; in the basement of the clock tower. I can't remember if the one in Vorenthius' house is one or not.Quote Posted by Lady Taffer

the north gate is locked and guarded by a creature after you get back from the mountain. Wouldn't the creatures be wanting to escape that way?I think you must mean
the west gate but it is already locked when you first get to town. It is also already protected by a force field of sorts. Only the patrolling creature is new when you get back from the mountain.Quote Posted by Lady Taffer
Also,
why weren't they in the town already when Garrett showes up? What were they doing hanging around the mountain? They are trapped there.
Vorenthius trapped them there when he stole one of the three relics and protected it behind some glyphs. Garrett steals them and uses them to escape the mountain by opening a portal and this allows the creatures to then use them to open even more portals.Quote Posted by Lady Taffer
After you get back into the town and flip that switch in the power plant
it appears to open up the portal to the creatures' world, but how does it do that? Those two events aren't connected.
The switch raises the west gate, that's all. The new portals were opened by the creatures (see above).Quote Posted by Lady Taffer

Vorenthius is an ex-Keeper. One or more of the notes refer to other Keepers that are the ones that tried to stop the spread of the creatures by closing and sealing the gates to Port Aerinth.
Most of this (if not all) is in the readables in the mission but you have to piece it together yourself really. Hope this helps.

the entrance is barred by a gate and a creature is guarding it. Seems to me, that the creatures would want to leave it open and go through it themselves instead of closing it off.Quote Posted by Tannar

The switch raises the west gate, that's all. The new portals were opened by the creatures (see above). That's what I thought, except the
vortex doesn't appear until after you return from the electric station and it's never really explained why that vortex suddenly pops up.Quote Posted by Tannar

Ahh, I kinda figured that was it, but I wasn't quite sure. As far as I've seen in the Thief world, Keepers never referred to each other as "brother," but Hammerites did.
Anyway, thanks! I'll keep looking for those readables.

in the attic above the street in Old Town er, where is this, exactly? The only place I can find in Old Town that might qualify as
an attic is that place with the teddy bears. . at least it has an upstairs. I'm not sure what attic you're talking about.

When you first enter Old Town there is a sort of raised walkway that goes over the street. Use the nearby barrel to climb up there and look around.

One of the required readables for the optional objective is: The tower looking over the street in Old Town. You need to either move the barrel from under the overpass (when you first enter Old Town) to a point where you can climb onto it, or make a crazy jump from the balcony from Crest's Inn (which I used to do but have had no luck lately). Then make your way to the tower and climb up the ladder.
edit* Ahh Tannar beat me to it. I should have known better ;)
Lady Taffer on 9/12/2009 at 06:59
I finally climbed up into the tower and read the readable, but the objective still didn't tick off. GODDAMN!:grr:
I know I've got all the other readables that were mentioned; what could I possibly be missing??
By the way, thanks for your help, guys!

I remembered one other readable that you need to read. In the police station, in the office with the broken electrical wire there is a book on the desk. I think that makes 6 total.
I'll shut up now, HB.:cheeky:

I read that one too. Maybe it's a glitch? :(

Tower in Old Town, Hanged Man's house on the night stand, in the mountain with the opening to the outside with the wind/wave sounds after you sneak by the patrolling AI, police station in the room with the sparking wire, the house directly across from the ocean water in the room with all the candles and in the clocktower down below via the switch behind the bed. That should be it. I hope it didn't glitch for you :(
