I've tried the minimalist project (which I really like, but not the difficulty options - as an unrelated asside, I would love to see those being optional). I also tried the tweaker with no luck.
Has anyone tried to make blackjacking better for T3. 50% of the time I creep up behind a completely unaware guard and hit him, he then yells and turns around and starts searching for me. Guards cant be knocked out at all while sitting down or if they are at ANY angle other than directly in front of you. I can live with the last two, but sneaking up to a guard who has never seen or heard me only to have to reload a save is unliveable. It makes the game too irratating to play. It may take 5 tries of doing the exact same thing over and over again for it to finally 'work'.
Is there a setting somewhere or is anyone working on something that can make blackjacking more scientific and less random in Thief 3?
Thanks.

Try making sure the AIs head is in the centre of the screen.
For AIs who are sitting down, I think it may help to crouch as well.

Thanks a bunch for the reply, RSoul, but I'm sure that is not my problem. I have played through the game 3 times. The only thing that kept me going beyond the frustrations has been the fact that its Thief! But that is even starting to wear thin now.
Every guard I approach it seems that there is a 50/50 chance that I can / cant knock him out. I'm talking stationary, in the dark, guards that are humming to themselves. I creep up behind them, get real still. click the mouse, I hear the thud, see blood, and the guard then starts looking for me. The key that I did it right, is he doesnt know where I am. He pulls out his sword and starts to look after I hit him. sometimes he goes forward and looks around and never finds me. most of the time I have to reload, do the EXACT same thing, and then it works. I dont remember it being as bad my first playthrough, so maybe my install is hosed. Any more help would be appreciated if anyone has had the same experience.
As for the guard in the chair, that has never worked for me either. I have to get them out by making sound and then knock them out when they go back and stand by where the chair used to be.
Thanks.

That's not right at all. If you blackjack him right in the cervical, he should fall 100% of the time. Are you playing the original boxed game? If you installed/uninstalled mods, try a complete fresh install.
Sitting guards can't be KOed, you'd have to do it the way you described. But then again, they're already parked, why KO them?

If your arm doesn't raise, you can't blackjack them yet. Be sure you only hit the button/key to swing AFTER the arm goes up. Following this rule, I don't have any problem with bad blackjack attempts.

I've only ever blackjacked the guy in reception in the inn in the training mission.

try this, walk up behind them and simply hold still for about 1/2 a second at close range, even in minimalist this seems to give me like 100% success, if you BJ while moving your success rate drops... maybe you can't aim for the "sweet spot" very well? I dunno

Ulgh.
When first I saw the title, I thought some moron had necro'd Smegmus Magnus' brilliant mod concept thread.
Just remembered that thread got locked, but still...the idea should not be revived in any form.

Thanks for the comments. I do have minimalist installed but I didnt think that tweaked blackjacking. I do remember the arm raising my first play through and it hasnt done that lately. I'll do a fresh install. Thanks.
as for not blackjacking... I don't play that! My mark on this world is a knotted head. But I need a name and the sticky bandits is already taken...
