Ok I did a search here to no avail to see if this has been already asked and answered....
I start T3 in expert mode. First level requires 90% of the loot to complete the level. However when I get to any of the following levels the loot total required says only 40%. I'm thinking that this can't be right. But once the game is started it doesn't allow you to change your difficulty level. Or at least for the life of me I can't see how to do it. But I would think that once you start a game at expert that all the preceding levels should be at the same level. Which makes me believe that 40% is definitely not correct. Anyway if it's not correct any ideas as to how to fix this? Games was recently downloaded and installed via Steam... Guess I could try downloading and installing again but before going through that process I thought I'd ask to hopefully not waste the time doing so...

Is the download the patched version? If not then you need the patch, as it fixed that problem I believe.

In all the Thief games you can choose the difficulty level for each mission. The difficulty tabs/buttons show on the right hand side of the screen. But perhaps there's an issue with the steam version?

IIRC, in TDS you have to manually select "expert" for every mission, unlike T1/T2 which carry your last selection over to the next mission.

One of the problems when TDS first came out was that the difficulty setting kept falling back to Normal after, say, a reload. This is one of the first things the community coders worked to repair. Make sure you have the patched version, or get the patch.
For example:

Hopefully, another more-experienced taffer will add his/her two-cents.

That bug only affected the AI's awareness.

I only see those tab/buttons when I'm at the first mission. After that the buttons are not there.
I'll have to recheck what version the game is at. But I thought when I first checked that it was at the patched version but I might be mistaken. I'll check when I get home from work today... I know that I did try to run the patch just to make sure but it wouldn't run. One of the issues with having downloaded and installed from Steam....
BTW... Thanks to everybody for the quick helpful responses. It's appreciated...

Ok it appears that the game version is 1.0. When it starts up there is a small 1.0 on the screen in the upper left side of screen. However after it gets to the menu screen in the lower right you see "Version" but that's it. Doesn't give an actual numeric value after it.
I tried downloading the patch but when it runs it errors out.
What I don't understand is that this was just recently offered on Steam. Why would it only be version 1.0 instead of 1.1 unless it's a slightly different version of the game because of it installing through Steam. If that was the case then you would think that it would not have this bug in it or if it did that an update would have been pushed to it through Steam by now....
Anyway I went to the Eidos site and left a message with their tech support asking about all of this. Waiting to here back which they claim could take a week...

Please make a screenshot when you see text briefing of the mission. Just press 'Print Screen' then Alt+Tab and paste it into any picture editor.

Ok I've gotten tied with some things so I haven't been able to onto the game to take any screen shots. Last time I played the game I didn't keep my saved games so I'll have to play through the second mission and get to the 3 mission briefing to show what I'm not seeing as far as the option to change difficulty... I'll try to get to it soon and post screenshots..
Got an initial response from Edios tech support but was told that they don't support downloaded versions of the game, only commercial cd/dvd releases. They said that they have passed the trouble ticket to another support group who are suppose to handle download versions like via Steam but have not yet heard from them which really doesn't surprise me much...
