T4 on UE 3.0? Rumors about the engine. - by Judith

No love for the Unreal Engine?
I'm a big fan of its capabilities, and IMO it's great news. Very easy engine to work with, too. I know relatively little about what those guys were arguing about, but I seem to remember having toggling lights in a few spots in the maps that I made with any problems whatsoever.

UE3 is good for mapping. What it's NOT good for though is characters. There's a reason why most UE3 games are centered on bulky, bald marines in metallic armor.

'C#/Winforms/XNA,' eh? I guess we can put the 'PC exclusive' rumours to bed.

A Thief sequel and Deus Ex sequel made at the same time by the same people using the same engine sharing assets, what could go wrong?

Same company, but different people, and the engine has to have much of its code replaced for a Thief game, so I don't know how much DX3 can be scrutinized for clues about T4, though I'll be looking at it, too. A lot can go wrong, and since only hype, and little of that, even, has been shared about T4's progress, we're really in the dark about it.

That would be great news.
Just finished my fourth Mass Effect 2 playthrough. UE engine 3 definitely does the business.

me2 had amazing engineers. batman, another awesome game - not so much, - lot's of texture popping and slow loads. It's also still badly optimized for anything above singlecore, has still widescreen issues (in 16:10).....it's an OK engine from my purely customer/gamer/no modder standpoint, - I would have gone with the cryengine2/3.

It would be horrible. I cannot remember a game which was created on UE and didn't look either too cartoony or blocky or both, there is something in that engine that prevents games look and more importantly *feel* properly.

why? EDIT: nice edit there >:[
Bioshock showed that you could make pretty and atmospheric environments. Mass Effect 2 showed that you could add some interesting interaction and gameplay mechanics on top. Mirror's Edge showed that you could even plug easily a different lighting renderer and great body awareness. Arkham Asylum showed that you could make a good multiplatform game with it.
Now they need to do all that. Almost impossible, but they would have to anyway to make a worthy Thief game.
The choice of UE3 looks sound to me, even though they will have to work extra hard to erase that "UNREAL ENGINE INSIDE" look that plagues most of the UE games.

They all look cartoony to me (Except AA which I haven't played), I'd call UE an engine with anti-photorealistic or rather anti-realistic feel. I'm somehow sure it would be impossible to make a game on it looking and feeling like Stalker f.e. Besides, we already have TDS, thank you very much. :)
