Avellone was trying to subvert as many DnD cliches as he could, which is why death is harmless and rats are one of the toughest enemies in the game.
Anyway, the same guys made Icewind Dale after PST and went straight back to using the real 2.5 system and Forgotten Realms lore.

Oh god, THIS. My biggest gripe playing a low-mid level wizard in DnD. Either you end up saving for big bosses, meaning you are a useless party member, or your gameplay ends up like this:
Kill two thugs. Rest. Advance 10 meters. Kill two thugs. Rest. Advance 10 meters. Kill two thugs. Rest. Advance 10 meters. Kill two thugs. Rest. Get ambushed with no spells. Die. GG
In BG I don't ever recall that being the case (needing to rest every 2 seconds). Depending on who your casters are, you set them up with ranged weapons, and just use attack spells when its absolutely necessary.
I generally went about clearing entire zones without needing to rest once (I'd rest after each one) in the early game.
Though in Eye of The Beholder I recall that being more of an issue. But even then if your careful you'll be fine in most cases for a while.
However if your specifically meaning in the case of soloing then fine, but that's to be expected. If they'd done the opposite and given wizards infinite spells that would make them overpowered from the get go, which would be crazy. The whole consensus in rpgs (both D&D and elsewhere) is that mages suck early game, but then get all powerful later on, whilst fighters/melee classes are good from the start but don't get epically powerful to the same extent as an endgame mage. Hence why mixed party is the best choice.

In related news: I'm finally going in ahead with my Throne Of Bhaal playthrough, and with that complete I shall be done with the BG saga for quite a while.
It's been a bumpy, imperfect, road. But it also has been one Hell of a fun and entertaining road.
Cheers!
(Continue bickering and flinging shit at your discretion, lads).

Throne of Baal is the weak link in the trilogy, imho, but it's worth grinding through to complete the Baalspawn story I guess.

i concur. however i was fond of the lack of a limit on monster summoning so having 50 hobgoblins on the screen helps clear anything.

I like
ToB better when I think of it as a combat-focused expansion rather than as the third and final part of a trilogy, even if that's essentially what it was supposed to be. It's simply too much of an escalating series of boss fights for me to enjoy it as a full
Baldur's Gate title, especially after
Shadows of Amn.

lol... why is your mage carrying the team? :p
Because in most RPGs when you are just starting out, your mage IS your entire team.
Also lol @ people saying "just use bows." A mage that uses bows isn't a mage, he's a ranger/bowman/wtf you wanna call it. Honestly, do you not see the irony of that suggestion?
I'm not asking to make mages uber-powerful starting out. Just make them... not utterly useless and, worst of all, *unfun* in the beginning. I mean, pretty much for the first 5-10 hours your mage is literally just sitting, chilling in the back, throwing the occasional magic missle here and there (which usually deals less damage than a single of your Melee guy's attacks). Yea I know "mages weak in beginning powerful in end" but why do I need to wait half the goddamn game before my mages actually BECOME mages instead of spectators or glorified bowmen...
