I am playing Thief: Dark Project for the first time and I have now come to the mission "Return to the cathedral". I am also playing using
Zero damage way (as I have read somewhere that it is called) because I like to play
thief, not assassin, ghostbuster or killing machine.
Now I have come to the task to kill all Hammer Haunts, but I seem to have too little equipment to do the job. I have 21 water arrows (I think I have taken all possible except one) and 3 holy waters and probably something else. I prefer using somtehing that doesn't add towards my damage count, but can resort to this if I absolutely must. The problem is that it takes me 4 holy water arrows to kill a haunt, even if some walkthroughs claim that it should be possible with 2. There is 9 haunts to kill, so I need to kill in average 3 haunts for each holy water using a maximum of 7 water arrows each time. This is quite a lot in 30 seconds. At least for me. Another problem is that the fountain in the room to the right of the big hammer altar (the eye were above this) doesn't seem to work, so I can't cheat some extra holy time from using that.
Also, some walkthrough ((
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/keeperchapel/RTC/) http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/keeperchapel/RTC/) says that I can kill the haunts by throwing a hammer at them. Is this the blessed holy hammer I made earlier or some other hammer? I have tried some hammers I've found with no luck so far.
Any other tips on how to fight these?

Wait, wasn't that font supposed to heal you?
As for zero damage...unless you can get them to kill themselves or be killed by something else, you'll have to deal damage. If you can round them up--get them all in the same place--you can wipe 'em out with the holy water arrows by getting more than one at once. Unless someone can post a solution, I'd say you're gonna have to backstab 'em all. (I know, I know, it shouldn't be possible, and it deals damage)....

I think it will be difficult to manage to round most of them (it would be enough with all in the cloister area plus all in the cathedral) to one spot without getting killed myself.
Well, maybe I should give up and just kill those left with my sword. It'll be "zero damage except the haunts in the cathedral way". :P
Oh, about the fountain: If it is supposed to heal me, then I definitely wouldn't know what it's for. I never need healing because I prefer reloading to get hit. It wouldn't do to let Garret's coat get scratched, would it?

I would definitely use the sword and backstab the haunts. It's just as effective as holy water, so why waste water arrows on them? It actually took me quite a long time to realize that they can be backstabbed. :)

Holy water arrows don't add to the damage counter. Sword does. Other than that there is no real reason, no.
I would like to have a holy water source and just drown the entire place in holy water. :)

I have now also read some on lytha.com (a great site, btw) and there ((
http://www.lytha.com/thief/lythaway/rtc.phtml)) is also talk about hammers being thrown at the haunts. It must be the big hammers that lie around here and there, yes?
I think I'll have to experiment a little.

Just a thought but what about flash bombing them to death. I always kill them that way. I wait for all to be in the main room with the eye and then it only takes like 2 or 3 bombs to kill everything. I usually throw from the second or third floor.

Emphasis added by me:

Unless that "something else" means 2 or three flashbombs, and flashbombs don't count as damage dealt, he still needs to round 'em up, but that would be an option.

The hammer you need is the normal Hammerite hammers you find lying about. The tactic I used was to wait until the Haunt walked away from you, run towards them and throw the hammer. It usually takes 2-3 whacks to kill them. And I believe it adds no damage to your stats.

I'll try both hammers and flashbombs (although I think that I only have one flashbomb). Plus holy water arrows of course.
