I've taken the "elevator" up but I'm having trouble finding the grimoire - the haunts seem to keep coming no matter how many I kill, and should I do something to the floating golden skull?

The grimoire is floating above the coffin in the centre. The haunts will keep coming indefinitely, and Knoss (the skull) cannot be killed. If everyone is alerted, you'll probably need to distract them and run, otherwise, sneaky sneaky. :)

My goodness!
Really epic effort in this one. Both mission halves very enjoyable.
The second half especially creative in so many ways.
Top notch work!
Twenty years on and people are still devoting so much to this game. Has any other game ever had such a dedicated fan base (outside of Doom and Diablo II)?

A question about floating lanterns: do they react to the player in any way? Standing in front of them does nothing, and they giggle occasionally, so there is no way to tell their alerts. They can, however, be spooked by loud sounds such as arrow impacts, which make me think that they are like AIs, but I'm still not sure.

They shouldn't react to anything, they're basically will o' the wisps. If they are reacting to audio alerts, I probably messed up somewhere.

I think they behave like neutral NPC. In other words they will first alert to you if you are just too close to them and they will run away if they will hear something very loud. Just be quiet and stay out of their way.

Thanks, that's good to know. Yeah, they react to noises, but it doesn't affect the gameplay in any way; it only matters for Ghosting.

I had that idea too, but the difference is that neutral AIs become hostile when they see you use weapons. These guys don't react to you in any way. I don't think they have first or second alerts either; they always make sounds even when they don't see you.

I think for your ghosting you should avoid making lanterns run away. Few months ago I did casual ghost of this mission and I know it's not that hard.
