I must be missing something. I've been to the armory. I've been through the asylum passageway, saw the green lady. She disappeared and looks like a dead thief instead. I cannot locate this gate with the skeleton to proceed. I suppose that is where I need to go. There is talk of a balcony with broken stairs, but the only thing I see is a opening that you cannot crawl through in the return tube to the mines. Where can I find the gate with the skeleton and this balcony?

I'm a bit confused as to where you are. Are you still in the starting mines close to the armory? Or have you gotten past the mine shaft with the lady that disappears where the lights go out? That's where you're supposed to go after visiting the armory. Make sure you read the book in the armory, as I think that triggers a gate in the shaft with the lady to open. Then it should open up to a huge cave with a broken water pipe and a zombie roaming down below. Have you been here?

Rustmite, in the area of the mines with the hole in the ground filled with water which leads to the sewer switches... from above that hole go back into those mines and to the right, there's another opening on the right side and a ramp going downward to the gate with the skeleton. Hope that helps!

I think rustmite has entered the part of the asylum where one can see the lady in green across a pit filled with lava. A dead thief is also lying there, but he already is there when the lady makes her appearance. If I am right, rustmite has to find the gate that lies beyond a skeleton in the mines, and where the lady appears again after one or two (on Expert) readables have been read.
Thus, the first task would be to enter the armoury (not far from the starting point) and read the book there. Then, it's back to the mines, and rustmite should look for a stone beam that is partially blocking a passage leading away from the main path. Garrett can crouch down and then pass through beneath the beam, and should find an apple near a wooden beam as well as - possibly only on Expert - a scroll that should be read. It talks about a gate sometimes opening on its own for a short period of time.
This gate is just a bit further along the passage. After having read the book in the armoury and possibly the scroll here in this passage, Garrett needs to go down there, and lo and behold! the lady in green appears beyond the gate, and the gate opens.
The part with a balcony and broken stairs comes much later in the mission.
P.S.: Beaten by the Phantom! That's my punishment for writing these long posts, I guess.;)
