Scenario 1:
We are a group of pagans living together. One day a thief breaks in, knocks all the population unconscious, steals all our valuables, sets all the tree-beasts on fire, kills one of our order so he could steal one of our most-prized possessions, the Jacknall's Paw. So what do we do with him, you might ask?! Do we find him, tie him to a tree and cut the living flesh of his bones until he confesses where he has hidden the Paw, and then let the wolves finish him off?! No! We decide to forgive him if he promises to plant some moss around city buildings.
Scenario 2:
We are a group of Hammerites in St. Edgar's church. One day a thief breaks in, knocks all the brothers unconscious, gives the high priest a big lump on the head, steals all our valuables and also takes the Chalice that we hold so dear. So what do we do with him? Do we take him to Cragscleft and put him on the rack until he starts singing, then dump him in the mines as zombie food? No! We promise to forgive him if he runs around the city hitting cockroaches on the head with his slippers.
What were the designers thinking?!

ROFL!! I never thought of it that way!

They wanted to make sure that the Hammers and Pagans seemed as stupid as the Keepers.

Most likely, though they did try to give excuses for that.
Pagans:
1. Didn't know Garrett took the Paw at first, thought the Hammerheads had something to do with it, and were preparing for war against them, anyway.
2. Viktoria warned Dyan not to harm Garrett, that he had a purpose. Dyan's own visionings confirmed he did.
Hammerites:
1. Didn't know Garrett took the Chalice at first, thought the pagan scum had something to do with it, were more willing than ever to kill pagans on sight.
2. Drept seems to know more than is ever explained. Even the Hammers who question Drept's faith trust his judgment to keep Garrett alive a few days more.
And what did Artemus actually say and do when he talked with them? If the Keepers can make pacts with Hammers (The Talismans, and without exposing the Keeper society, either) and Sentient Artifacts, why not pagan leaders and Hammers?
Yeah, I don't like it much, either.

Thou hast put thine very digit on the gist, nay, crux of the thing. :cheeky:

Unfortunately these...erm... Perry (?) sound files judging Garrett's behaviour in St Edgar's/Pagan Tunnels have apparently not been implemented into the game. Their summary is always like "Usually nobody notices you're there, right? Had a bad day, hadn't you?" ...unless of course no one indeed was BJed. I haven't found the scripts for these yet and maybe they're not even there, but the soundfiles speak for themselves... and maybe the fact that they were not used in the end.
Anyway, we're a group of Hammerites protecting the temple with at least one high priest. One day a thief breaks in, disguised as a novice, steals everything not nailed down, knocks out lots of guards and the high priest while he's sleeping (!), unlocks our modern artsy-fartsy security system to steal our most precious and dangerous objects by heretically reciting a Builder's prayer and what do we do? Send out patrols on the streets to capture the villain? Nooo, when we finally see him again wandering seemingly peaceful among the foul pagan creatures the first thing we say is: "Hi there, master thief, it's you! You see, can't you bring us back our high priest, you know the one you almost clubbed to death in sleep, yes, and bring him back to us alone? Thanks in advance!"

For what it's worth, by Assassins the Hammers were getting ready to close up Cragscleft.
jtr7 on 2/2/2009 at 19:01
Where did you get that impression?:sly:
Sg3c1501: "Jorik tells me the Hammers are gonna close down Cragscleft."
sg1c1502: "Yeah, he's taffing you. Where are they gonna put the poor saps they grab?"
Sg3c1503: "Dunno... Toss 'em into a well or something. Anyhow they just don't have enough guys no more."
sg1c1504: "Kinda sad. They used to be the power. Now they're just a bunch of guys wishing for the old days."
If it were true, that there were too few of them to run Cragscleft, then something happened between this point in time and in TMA, when there really weren't a lot of Hammerites left, but they still put a woman from Shalebridge in Cragscleft.

Huh. I was so gripped by the plot I never bothered with the factions, so ...
Jtr7 is a wizard.
jtr7 on 2/2/2009 at 23:29
The main plot is about the factions and how Garrett knocks them off their high-horses, even though he'd rather just steal stuff!:joke:
