Installing other games might not be an issue. For me, it wasn't consistent. T3 wouldn't install, some applications would fail, but others would be fine. It can be picky.
I can't see the graphics card causing an installation to fail. It would most likely be a disk, motherboard, ram or hard drive problem. You could try doing a defrag to see if that makes a difference.

If it is a Geforce 6600 it's impossible, unless it's damaged by itself, because Thief runs so properly with it, that my original copy were affiliated with the videocard package.
