Re that screenshot.
If It is where I think, you have just come down in a lift. If so you can send the lift back up which reveals a hole in the floor. You can drop down into the basement and avoid those guards.
The guards in narrow corridors you don't need alcoves to get around though.
The flatten-against walls move is there for a reason. Squish in and let the guy walk right past you: so long as it's dark enough (doesn't have to be totally dark even) and he doesn't touch you, off they go.

I managed to sneak past them leaning towards the left. I did it so slow that it seemed eternity.
Move, hear one of the guards get alarmed, freeze until he calms down, move again, and so on. Takes very long and maybe sounds crazy and bpring (I am sure there are more reasonable solutions) but it did work for me, it means it
is possible, and it means sneaking is not all that worthless. it was told here that the game is easy at expert cos of all the weapons and means you have in a lot at every mission. But it's all about sneaking, not killing, so on that score I guess it is not that simple and whether it is linear or not matters a little when it comes to ghosting.

yes, it's POSSIBLE to do all the sneaking that you could do in the Metal Age, but the Metal Age felt like it encouraged you to ghost where possible. Whereas Deadly Shadows encouraged you to silence the whole level.

What do you mean by encouraging? It definitely didn't seem so to me... By the time I was half way into the game I rarely used anything except the blackjack. It is ghosting that brings most of the pleasure in the game for me.
I think it's because TDS was my first Thief game, I learned to sence the guards pretty soon and well to avoid them.

Currently I replay TDS for the third time (first time on Expert diff.) and I try to play it Lytha style where I see it possible - the re are some rare places where I decide to blackjack or otherwise incapatitate AI which would be tricky to sneak around (not kill them). It certainly is a better challenge, although I still find the game to be somehow easy.
I don't need most of the gear I find, except for water arrows.
But I have no moral objections to backstabbing Ratmen and Kurshok. :p
Also as a side note, this probably wouldn't make me a hardcore taffer, but I turn the 3rd/1st person views as I please. Garrett looks cool moving, twice as much with hi-res textures.

Come on! Choking them with moss is entertaining!

I just started playing Thief Deadly Shadows today. I dislike how they've gotten rid of the cinematic briefings for missions, and the city seems to have into almost totally being medieval rather than steampunk.
Regardless, i thought the Inn and Rutherford castle were great opening missions, and the atmosphere in the game is top notch, so i'll reserve judgement till later.

Yeah, whoever was in charge of the art design of the game, really had a poor understanding of steampunk. The city really looked nothing like it did in the previous games...it was just so generic looking.
