Hi there,
I wonder why the pagan sanctuary in Thief DS is actually an old Hammerite factory?!? And why some of the instruments there continue to function - for example we see steam from pipes...
And where is the sanctuary located? Under the new Hammerite factory? Or is this part of the Old Quarted?

Ahh, I see...
I'd also like to ask... why do we have zombies and haunts into the catacomb area in Fort Ironwood? This is something that surprised me a lot... Don't Hammerites care about this? The same surprised me when I saw haunts into the Mechanist seminery.

They care a great deal about it and the problem keeps occurring. The readables and conversations tell of this.

This is strange... Constantine is dead, the eye is not in the area and the Old Quarted looks restored.

Zombies and haunts seem to happen through other causes as well.
Both the Bonehoard and the Cragscleft mines have zombies that apparently aren't linked to Constantine or the eye.
It would seem that zombies can occur "naturally" in some areas.
The eye may have intensified or accelerated or even controlled the zombiefication in the walled off section but it's influence seems to have been confined to a small area.
Furthermore the Pagans are behind the continued appearance of undead in Fort Ironwood - there's a pagan shaman with the telling necromancer's wand.
About the Old Quarter: I don't think the whole quarter was zombiefied, but the walled off sector is located in the Old Quarter. Can't remember if that gets mentioned in TMA or TDS...

EDIT: Thanks Meisterdieb. I wrote this while you were posting:
It's explained in the readables and things Hammers say in TDP/Gold and TDS. The Hammers work their prisoners to death, especially the pagans, and they often rise as undead. Their punishments are cruel and the dead come back to haunt them. The Bonehoard was Hammer-built and it is rife with undead. Cragscleft is a Hammer facility and they have undead. The Hammer Haunts are the possessed bodies of Hammers whose graves have been desecrated. The Eye and the Trickster aren't the sole sources of necromantic energies. Azaran the Cruel, an Earth Mage, also wielded necromancy, and the pagan shaman is able to use the Necromancer's Wand, made effective by the magic drawn from the Pagan Sapling and mossing the Pagan Cornerstones. Necromancy also seems to be a random event, as random as the formation of Elemental Crystals in the environment.
There's only a portion of the Old Quarter that was walled off. TDP/Gold mentioned it. It's only a section. Unfortunately, TDS only has the Cataclysm Memorial, and nothing else to explain what happened to the walled-off portion, or if it was cleaned up.

Very interesting...
Looks like the Cradle is a different case, however.

Well, there is a quote (actually a game tip) on the load screen in TDS, that states : "Hammer Haunts are former Hammerites, who's burial place was desecrated."
That's probably the best explanation for the emergence of Undead in the Thiefverse. It's really quite possible that a lot of people who die horrible and sudden deaths and don't get a proper funeral become... well... zombies, apparitions or other human-derived monsters... The people of the Thiefverse very probably try to avoid living close to cemeteries (IMHO). They're also probably fond of keeping the funeral services in the City up and running, otherwise... :cheeky: ;)

Yep. Like I said, the readables and speech explain it. After the Hammer (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125617) quotes and sayings thread, I'm pooped.:p
Murus asks Garrett to kill all the Haunts that possess his brethren, and the readables in
Return to the Cathedral mention "Our own fallen brethren rise from death and turn on us, cold light aflame in their eyes."
Yeah, the Cradle is yet another example of a strong pool of necromancy from all the horror, pain, death, and misery.
And to answer one of your first questions, in TDP/Gold, it was established that there are unconventional sources of electrical power, mostly Tesla-type coils, but also the Collector Towers, and even the small collector street lamps. Perpetual energy is common in the
Thief Universe. The Old Quarter Power Grid still works after 50 years of neglect.
