And to answer one of your first questions, in TDP/Gold, it was established that there are unconventional sources of electrical power, mostly Tesla-type coils, but also the Collector Towers, and even the small collector street lamps. Perpetual energy is common in the Thief Universe. The Old Quarter Power Grid still works after 50 years of neglect.
Very true....
And don't you find the Clocktower in TDS very weird?
The mechanism of a normal pendulum clock is quite, quite simple. You need a spring or a load, gears and a pendulum. That's all. In contrast, the clock used in TDS is extremely complicated - it's said that the machinery has killed a lot of people.
This is both weird and funny.

I guess it's all they could come up with to make it more plausible for the tower to fall, to have a crank shaft run from he basement to the top of the tower. With boilers in the basement driving the pendulums, suddenly stopping the crank shaft would destroy the boilers, but the boilers didn't seem big enough to blow apart the building's foundation, unless there was an even lower level with boilers, or the foundation was already shamefully shoddy. Maybe a sinkhole formed and the explosion was enough to collapse the foundation into the hollow below. But I'm stretching, though it's not outside what is seen in The City already.

Burricks could have made tunnels under it. Perhaps Weythran put them there knowing they'd cause trouble.

Don't know if anyone still got the link, but there were a couple of TDS notes from somewhere within ISA. One was concerned with the original buildings in the Pagan mission (factory, hotel etc.).

Exactly, thanks. I got the files on my hard disk, but didn't have the link.

(
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/8631/herewego32tt8.gif) Here is a fan-made map which shows the locations.
On necromancy, LGS were planning to make a level all about necromancy, developing on the side plot of Azaran the Cruel and the Necromancer's Spire, for thief 2 gold. I suppose they might have been a new minor faction like the Mages were in the 1st game, just in the style of transylvania or something.
Also, according to the (
http://thief.wikia.com/wiki/Abysmal_Gale) thief wiki, the crew of the abysmal gale started to act weird when they got hold of the compendium of reproach, at the time just a golden slab with a glyph carved into it. I wonder if the glyphs intention was to infect anyone who found it so as too fool them into making it even more secure. Then perhaps the sentients are capable of the same thing.
jtr7 on 10/3/2009 at 02:36
The story is very mysterious. Whatever magic or alchemy existed to make the Sentients, or made it possible for that kind of "creature" to be formed, could very well have allowed the Compendium to have a will of it's own, a kind of power as what happened in the Cataclysm, and the ability to roam where it wished. If the Compendium was a kind of Sentient, made wholly by the Keepers, it could have affected the crew that way with the single purpose of returning to The City when the time was right. Gamall either triggered the return of the ship somehow or she was merely trying to get the Compendium first, knowing it was on its way, and failed:

Actually, the captain 'went wonky' long after he had found the slab, and left it back at home - the Gale had issues the voyage AFTER Moira'd found the Compendium. I'd suspect that [spoiler]Gamall got aboard the ship after finding out what she needed to (perhaps using the transportation glyph she uses elsewhere in the game) and did something to the Captain, if only because of the various log entries for the voyage, and the ones left in his secret quarters at home.
In short, the wikia article is somewhat incorrect. Which, I find, is a problem endemic with the Thief wiki, even with jtr7's expert advice.

Captain's Log
Day 42-
Cook outdid himself tonight. A fine meal. At least at the officer's table. And why not? We've done well on this trip, and tomorrow morning I'll announce to the men that we'll be steering for home. I'm looking forward to seeing my Edwina.
I guess a scarf of hers is just as good a lucky piece as that telescope of mine.
Day 43-

Ship's Manifest
Been a fine take, but nothing real exotic like the last trip. Like that golden slab with the strange symbol - now that's a once in a lifetime thing. Couldn't seem to make a dent in it or split it up, so I took the whole thing home with me. Captain's prerogative. Edwina doesn't know. Wouldn't want her to. She'd just ask questions - and she wouldn't like the answers. That I'm less of a merchant ship captain - and more of a pirate. And we only found that gold slab because we saw a cave that looked like a good place to hide some of our haul. And lo and behold someone else musta thought it was a good hiding place too, because there was the treasure. Some traps around it too. Lost a few good men that day. Edwina doesn't have to know all that, does she? Heck, she'd just fret and worry. Like that time she found out about the secret boathouse near the cliffs by our home. I had a real time of it trying to explain that one.

Day 44-
The captain's got us hauling out the cargo searching for something. Whatever it is, can't it wait ‘til we're back in port?
We'll be out of food in a few days, and water's short. We don't have time for this. And I told him so. Didn't even answer.
Not like Moira. Not like him at all.
Day 45-
Moira's search went on through the night. He's tossing our cargo overboard after he's made sure it ain't what he's after.
The men are tired and confused. Don't want to question his orders in front of the crew, but that's our profits going in the water! Cook says he ain't been eating, so I sent him topside with a tray of the captain's favorite. I ain't never seen anyone look so deranged. Poor ol' Cook, he'll be missed.
Day 46-
The captain is out of his mind! Once everything was over the side and he still didn't have what he was lookin for, he started screaming! - Where is it? Do you have it?! - None of us have a clue what he's on about. My duty now is to get the remaining men home. I never thought I'd be one for mutiny, but there's no other way. We got the knives ready. It's now or never.

Thursday
Will the storm never let up? We've been kept in port for three days, while the men stay on pay, lest they find other work. The treasure perplexes me. What manner of gold is it that gleams so, but does not dent? What does the strange symbol on it mean? Is it solid? No, not heavy enough - hollow then.
Friday
I endeavored to melt it, but the treasure shows no sign of warp or scorching. I've heard of things protected by wards and such - could this be such an item? I have placed it in the secret room for now, but this warrants further study when I return.
Monday
The weather finally broke, and tomorrow we'll set sail - if the Dock master is in the mood to take a bribe from an old marauder like me. Too bad I'll have to leave behind my fine gold telescope, the Nereid - the glass lens is chipped.
If I were a superstitious man, I'd delay the trip. For now it will stay here - on display in the rotunda.
Enough for me to suspect the involvment of TDS' BigBad, at any rate. As to the aftermath (ie, the return of the Abysmal Gale), I'll respond to this:

It seems a classic 'restless dead/unfinished business' haunt situation, which has a precedent in the Thief universe, rather than either a new crew OR glyph magic. More like a classic ghost story - there are several (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widow%27s_walk) 'widows walk' style ghost tales out there, where a ghost ship comes home to harbour because of unfinished business.
