i'm getting a little annoyed at the thief 3 hate. compared to the first two games, in general it's not as good. (however, the minimalist mod helps a LOT. and there are some truly great moments in the game that don't necessarily take place in the cradle.) but compared to other games that have been coming out lately, thief 3 is fucking genius. i certainly like it better than the borefest that is splinter cell.
but it's "cool" to hate thief 3, apparently. frankly, it could've been worse. it could've been like DXIW.

I'm sure I've left things out or made some mistakes.

An exceptional Thief series development history lesson + review. I like how you gave a bit of an angle on how the development affected the game. That's not something generally covered in reviews or editorials. I guess in most cases the end user only cares about the product in their hands and not the development of it. Good thing Thief fans aren't the average end user :D

Thank you for that. I really can't stand all the Thief 3 hate. As I've said before, I love the game. I think it's absolutely brilliant, and the dynamic shadows and cool bumpmaps definitely add to the atmosphere of the game. But of course, we're not just talking about graphics here, or else Thief 3 would take the trophy. We're talking about gameplay, and in that aspect I love Thief: DS. I do so because of the diversity, the ability to complete missions and collect loot using many different methods. Also, the AI really help the game really get together and feel very thief-like. One of my favorite moments in the game is when someone has their back turned to me, but I run in front of a torch, casting a shadow right in front of them. They turn around, but I'm already behind them. So I sneak up and then... WHACK! Right in the head with a black jack.
Very nice review, by the way. You really knew what you were talking about.

Even that has been debated. Many of us find TDS's art direction to be bland and cartoonish compared to the gritty steampunk photo-sourced look of Thief 1 and 2.

Well, call me a "fanboy", but once again I'm going to have to disagree.

You should really avoid statements like that, which lead you wide open, when you are talking to Zylon... in fact make that just in general on this forum.
As to the graphics, there were few "wow cool" moments as far as the first two games went visually... Although I loved them to death, there were many more breathtaking visual sections in TDS (I think it was overlook mansion which had the lightning affects through the windows).
Art direction is slightly different to just the quality of the graphics methinks... And in this respect I think TDS can at least hold a candle to TMA in a lot of ways. I just felt like I was seeing a lot of the same in the second game, especially in missions like Shipping and Recieving, Casing, the Bank, and inside the sub... But I wouldn't argue that it had slightly more of an atmosphere than the first game. But I say slightly, because I was one person who liked the walking between missions.

i do too. i just wish they'd kept it interesting beyond the 4th or 5th day. after a while it just got boring and i found myself just going from one place to the other.

Thief: The Dark Project was full of excellent visuals. It all depends on your individual perception. For me, and half of the other people here, Thief I was the best thing out at that time. Not only that, but it had stellar gameplay to match. You see, Deadly may look good for its time, but the lack of gameplay goodness will always make it second best. ;}

I didn't think the art direction was bland, I daresay. I thought it was more rich and gave the game more character.
