Oh, I got the game on PC the day it came out. I got XP the next day. When I first started the game, along with all the newer people, I too was blown away. Going through the apartment showed much potential. As soon as the big picture came to light, suspending disbelief became increasingly difficult. The new fans were able to keep that cool garretts apartment vibe going through the whole game, not knowing the brilliance that had come before.

and that's exactly what i am, a new fan. so even though i made a point of playing classic thief first (not easy to do... first i had to FIND it, then i had to get it running, which brought me here :thumb: ) i can appreciate all of them.

the engine itself was fine, but horribly underoptimized.
Some of the actual developers of TDS are on record that no, the engine was not fine.

The recent Randy Smith interview shed light on the problems the developers had on the game. Many were in disagreement on the art and graphics direction. Sacrifices had been made, which resulted in the game losing it's quality potential.
It shows that the whole game was being designed by headless chickens. I mean, no disrespect to the taffers that gave us T: DS, but all the disagreements and the art and graphic direction should have been resolved and decided BEFORE they started making the game. A bit unprofessional, dontcha think?
Still a good game tho'. :p

It couldn't be helped (at that point). The game had to meet the deadlines, else there would be no game at all.

I just upgraded my comp so I just started playing TDS and just started visiting these forums. Anyways, whats this vanilla TDS, and I read Thief deadly blue shadows somewhere? Is this like a mod or something?

vanilla TDS is exactly that- the original game.
there's quite a few tweaks out there, one of them being the minimalist mod which makes changes to the game (mostly the HUD) to make it look more like classic thief.

I'll be releasing a minor update in the not too distant future. :)

That is certainly quite commendable. That type of calibre isnt very common in the younger players though. Nevertheless, now you can begin to get a glimpse of what the first fanbase was hoping Thief III would have been, assuming you completed and understood Dark Project and Metal Age. It would have been nice if the advertising and selling of Deadly had been handled in a more, honest manner. Noone wants to feel like they have given their heart to something only to be milked for a few crappy dollars in the end. I think it was metallican who said it best, that there was obviously a huge miscommunication between the fanbase and Warren/crew, and also between Warren and the crew itself! I hope he didnt take the Karras thing to heart.

well, i'm 23, actually. i missed out on thief when it first came out because i was broke. i still am, actually, but now i can buy things without trying to convince my mommy that it's not going to warp me or something and that i won't start hanging around low people and litterbugs and the like. stay away from them hardcore litterbugs man, they'll fuck you up.
but yes, i've completed both classic games. repeatedly. i never get tired of 'em. :) well, maybe some of the levels in thief gold... particularly mage towers and escape.
related: my spare copy of thief gold just came in the mail today! big pyramid box and all. <3
